I mean, I get what some people are saying. It's interesting to look at the fact that the most common Cecil is white. It's not wrong but it does tell us a bit about what we default to and all that. It's an interesting discussion if you can have it calmly and rationally.

However, I'm against shaming people for having any headcanon that isn't like someone else's. Which, you know, is happening in scores on both sides.

And in the end it focuses on one aspect of a show that isn't even supposed to be a thing. The show is about so much.

I feel oddly conflicted. I feel like discussion should happen about race and what it means. However, I don't feel like it should be the only thing we talk about, nor should it be used to attack people.

*Sigh* Sometimes I just want to talk about StrexCorp or the Man in the Tan Jacket too. But, I generally can't because it has become the defining characteristic of fandom. At least it has that I've seen.

I don't know, maybe it's just my personality, but when fandom starts saying "hey guys, we NEED to have a talk about this," I immediately think "yeah, we don't NEED to have a talk about anything." I'm not saying that people shouldn't talk about it, I just have my fandom priorities and this is so not one of them, and it pisses me off when it becomes so central to everything about it that I'm expected to talk about it. And of course people draw all kinds of conclusions if you don't talk about it.

And in the end it focuses on one aspect of a show that isn't even supposed to be a thing. The show is about so much.

This 110%.

No, I get you. I feel like sometimes the people who want to talk about it feel like the dismissive attitude means no one cares or is paying attention to something they feel deeply about. But now, because there's been such a strong reaction to the fact that not everyone wants to talk about it, it has become a defining aspect of the fandom. However, it's become so polarized that no real discussion is happening anyway. So it's lose-lose, for those who wanted to discuss race and those who didn't.

I'm not sure it's "default" though so much as "first thing I liked"

A lot of people saw one of these interpretations (and I think this is one of the earliest pictures right here):

And liked it. So... they did their drawings like it. It's more memetic then racially problematic unconsciousness.

Yeah, you're probably right. I know this artist. They're really good. They probably had a lot of influence early on.

Yeah, I like that one. I think that one and littleulvar's Cecil might be my favorites, and the biggest thing is that he's the right AGE. Like I don't give a shit about what color he is, but if he looks 25 I will not humor it.

The thing that sticks in my craw is facial expressions/structure. I can't even really describe it. It's just that... Some Cecils look more like Cecil than others, even if they look nothing like each other. The one you linked to is a good one. :D

Yes, I know what you mean. And I can't describe it either, but I know what you mean. :D

Yep. Saw that one prior to knowing virtually anything else about the show and wasn't even sure if it was fanart or official.

The first thing I even saw about WTNV was fanart with a design that REALLY REALLY looked like this, only the third eye was drawn to be taken as a metaphorical third eye instead of a literal one. But yeah, it really affected how I percieve my own Cecil. For example, I'm not too keen on the popular headcanon of the tattoos (and even less about those tattoos being sentient/becoming tentacles), just because they came after I had decided on my head that Cecil was (mostly?) human.
starphotographs: ...I'm not that bad, though. And I don't even light things on fire! Well, not regularly... (Izaya (devious))

I like the idea of him being a regular dude who just got some really freaky tattoos. I mean... Would you trust a tattoo parlor in fucking Night Vale to not pull some weird shit on you? XD
