As long as you're having fun, you're doing it right.

You can fill up your entire scroll with frozen hatchlings, have your vampires put the bite on shimmerscales and CB metals, collect nothing but messy mints, or breed your dragons based upon the personalities you've written for them rather than upon what would make a traditionally 'nice' lineage, but so long as you're enjoying yourself, there's no problem. Some playstyles might hurt your competitive ability on the trading market, but that only matters if you care about trading. At the end of the day, it's all pixels and their value is entirely subjective.
