But... there's no such thing as doing Dragoncave wrong!

I have never played that game, but that is the sort of thing I would do. I do it all the time with bathroom floor tiles and such.

Aw, that's actually cute. I don't play the game but you know what? As long as you're having fun you're going it right.

You are not alone. I do this too and get unreasonably excited when I have a 'bingo'.

As long as you're having fun, you're doing it right.

You can fill up your entire scroll with frozen hatchlings, have your vampires put the bite on shimmerscales and CB metals, collect nothing but messy mints, or breed your dragons based upon the personalities you've written for them rather than upon what would make a traditionally 'nice' lineage, but so long as you're enjoying yourself, there's no problem. Some playstyles might hurt your competitive ability on the trading market, but that only matters if you care about trading. At the end of the day, it's all pixels and their value is entirely subjective.

Huh, people still play Dragoncave?

I had fun with it for a while, but finally quit a few years ago when the administrator's childish attitude got more gross than the game was fun. Anyone know if that's improved or changed in recent years?

I think TJ is the same guy he's always been. I just ignore the forum's existence and just pick up the eggs I want.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only ever been to the forum to find out about new eggs, so I would have no idea.

But I like all my pretty dragons.

He's calmed down quite a bit regarding "spoilers" and "copyright infringement" (there's a wiki now) and rarely posts on the forums unless to announce a new release. If he's still a dick, he's gotten much better at keeping it to himself.

My secret: I kinda am amazed in a bad way that grown adults play click "games" like this. It's not even a real game, it's just... spam. I get the appeal of wanting to raise a dragon, but it just isn't a game.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I assume with clicky games part of the appeal to adults is there's so little time investment. (I know I don't really have time to play games anymore.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't just spam on the player's end- there's a certain amount of skill and competition involved in acquiring the rarer dragons, there's breeding (including the potential for hybrid dragons which can't be caught in the wild), there's trading between users, etc... Even the posting of eggs and hatchlings involves a bit of management because the rate and timing of views needs to fall within certain ranges at certain points in their lifecycle so that they don't either starve to death from too few or sicken from too many.

It may not be your style of game but there are legitimate game elements involved.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
it's not intended to be a 'game' in the sense of a pet raising sim.

you just collect the dragons the way you would collect dolls or trading cards or stamps. they're there to look pretty, that's the point.

Are you having fun?

Then no, you're not doing Dragoncave wrong.

It's a game, as long as you're having fun and not hurting anybody then you are by definition doing it right.
