Shit like this is the OPPOSITE of progressive. Instead of thinking "yay, she doesn't give a fuck about awful and rigid gender roles, and nor do her parents!", people go "CAN'T YOU SEE WHAT THEY ARE WEARING/DOING? CAN'T POSSIBLY BE A REAL GIRL!"

Except plenty of parents do give their children this amount of freedom. Dressing as a tomboy and calling your kid by their chosen nickname isn't something new or progressive.

Not here on Internetland, but in general day-to-day life -- especially in middle America -- seeing parents be so permissive of their child's choices, particularly when they stray so far from traditional ISN'T all that mainstream.

That's true, but all Shiloh really does is wear boy's clothes and have short hair. And that's not a really an unusual thing for kids of her age. Even in middle America. I used to work at a day care for kids aged 2-5, and most of the girls wore shorts or pants (because it's easier to play in than a dress) and had short hair (because it's easier to manage and won't get caught up in things).

Sure, some parents freak out when their little girls kiss other little girls, or they freak out when their little boy wants to play with dolls instead of toy trucks. But wearing pants and having short hair isn't that unusual. It's so bizarre to me that the media even makes a big deal out of Shiloh's looks, tbh.
