When really great WIP fics with that honestly seemed to be going somewhere with the story stop being updated and enough time passes that it's pretty clear they probably won't ever be finished. I get that people lose interest in what they're writing or get too frustrated by a problem with the story to continue. I also get that authors can die or RL can intervene, but it's still unfortunate to see a great story stall out or leave you on a cliff-hanger. I don't want to be one of those people badgering for updates and if I don't know the author, I don't feel it's appropriate to ask about RL problems, especially not when my primary motive is more fic.

I kicked a lot of WIPs from my e-reader because they hadn't been updated in over a year. Now I have 12 left, and they also don't get updates. So sad.

I followed a fic years ago for about two years while the author updated, then nothing. I kept it on my list because I loved the story so much and would read it about 3 years. Well 10 years after not updating, the author came back and finished the story!! It was actually even a fairly well done ending too and not something that seemed rushed.
