You might like Sabriel by Garth Nix. (Female protagonist, very actiony, there is romance but it's really only a couple paragraphs) Disclaimer: I've only read the first book, but it's part of a trilogy. No idea if the romance gets amped up in the later books or not. (I don't think the storyline just disappears, but I have no idea how much he is going to emphasize it.)

Been a long time since I read them, but I don't remember there being any romance at all in Lirael (just a protagonist who annoyed the hell out of me). I think there was some in Abhorsen, but not enough to really affect the plot.

I haven't read Lirael (yet). Is it a different protag?

Yes, Lirael is the central character for most (all?) of the second book and parts of the third. It's still all ultimately the same story, though.

Yeah, I know it's part of the same arc. I hope Sabriel's POV doesn't become too much less important though!

As a bonus to OP, though, Lirael is (I think?) also female

DA

Um... maybe prepare to be disappointed, then. There's very little of Sabriel in Lirael, as the book is set years after Sabriel. The series doesn't really cover the timeline from beginning to end, it jumps around. Sabriel doesn't feature prominently in the remainder of the trilogy at all.

They're still enjoyable, but yeah, I was disappointed, too.

I love Sabriel! I've read it many, many times. The romance does get a little amped up a bit, but mostly it stays in the background. Also,]I liked Sabriel and Touchstone together. So, I can sort excuse that

Ah, I'm sorry I couldn't recommend anything new then ;-; I don't read as much as I used to, and I tend to not care so much what the protag's gender is, and I like romance, so I don't have a ton of stuff that really fits your description. I've probably read some things that do, but not recently.
