Replying to a random comment from you in a random place in a random thread!

If you don't mind and/or like fanfic, have you read http://dragon-fanworks.livejournal.com/ 's stuff? She writes Varian/Garrosh stuff that's just so yummy. (Have to scroll to the second page of her LJ for it, she hasn't written the pairing in a while SOB!)

It may not be you/Garrosh, but Varian/Garrosh is the next best thing? :P

But don't you know that Sam was wrong, wrong, wrong, for wanting to go to college in the first place? That he was abandoning poor Dean, and being a terrible ingrate because Dean sacrificed his childhood to raise Sam?

At least, that's the way the Deangurls put it.

Yeah, I agree with the secret, and no, I don't think that going away to college was a betrayal of the family.

Re: Crazy crossover ideas?

I would love to see a Discworld crossover with Kingdom Hearts. Just picture sweet, optimistic Sora wandering the streets of Ankh-Morpork while Kairi is in Lancre learning from Granny, Nanny, Magrat and/or Agnes. Or Discworld with Star Trek (any series but Enterprise, because I haven't seen it yet), where Janeway takes pointers from Vetinari while Seven is deeply disturbed by the fact that even she can't figure out what Nobby's species is. Or Kingdom Hearts and Star Trek, where Kirk, Data, Quark and/or Tom Paris wind up with Keyblades.

And I know this is cheating a bit, but I'm actually almost done with chapter three of my Star Trek: Voyager/Pokemon Heart Gold crossover. Seven mysteriously wakes up in New Bark Town and befriends Ethan and his Marill, setting off a series of events which lead to her taking the Pokemon League Challenge with her jerkass Totodile. Hilarity ensues. Hopefully.

I was annoyed with the Spock/Uhura because I didn't like that the writers seemed to think there had to be a romance in the film. I had the same reaction to the added on romance in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

(I also had problems with the idea of Spock while he was a teacher having a relationship with a student.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and you'd almost think that people have the ability to read the summary and decide not to read the fic.

YANA. First, I thought the his wooden, emotionless, dull-as-ditchwater performance as Cas might be deliberate, due to the writing. Then I saw Stonehenge Apocolypse and he was just as bad. I don't get the hype, and I'm sure as soon as SPN goes off the air, Misha will disappear.

I don't count those any more than I would count background characters in an establishing shot of the restaurant, because it's basically white noise.

but with Winry it's made a defining character trait.

but with Winry it's made a defining character trait.

Wow okay I'm done. A defining trait? That is plainly incorrect. If you seriously think that the wrench gag, which happens a few times in the series, is a defining character trait of hers, then you are pretty clearly paying no mind to her character.

"How many [Starbucks] are there?"

"Per block?"

"...is there a law?"

It's the delivery, too. I really love the acting in this show.

Yes! He's so low-key, even in the face of all the crazy stuff. Though, him waking up in a hotel-room covered in post-its was brilliant.

AYRT. No, I am basing it on something Doyle actually said. The quote, if I recall correctly, was in relation to the Wilde prosecution, and he said "[such men] are more fit subjects for the consulting room [i.e. a doctor] than the courts" which was slightly more enlightened than general opinion which was still towards criminalising it.

I do have a lot of background in 19th century British social history and have read widely both about Doyle (as I write H/W slash, heh) and the period.

Please see my reply to anon below for quote. There have been several scholars who read homoerotic subtext, or at least Holmes as a gay man, in the stories, most notably "Strangers" by Graham Robb. A really good book on the subject, I recommend it.

There are tags for almost everything on the SPNKink_meme to be fair, but yes, bestiality (more with Jensen than with Dean though) is disturbingly popular. By comparison, I'm pretty glad it's ABO fic that made it out!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I see the phrase "H/W slash" and my mind goes IMMEDIATELY to House and Wilson rather than Holmes and Watson. (facepalm)

Because context doesn't matter - two women could be talking about their kids, if one of the kids is a boy, FAIL, is all of the kids are girls, PASS.

For fucks' sake, the rule states a MAN. The "context doesn't matter" only because you're an idiot who thinks everyone's as stupid as you and incapable of understanding what it's about.

I definitely get the teacher/student thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT Well, House is deliberately based on the Holmes character ( albeit very loosely) so no wonder. But I meant Holmes/Watson. Not, for the love of puppies "ACD Johnlock". Yuk.

It's Mangahood based. I don't remember if it specifically deals with Roy pulling Ed into the military, but it does go into Roy's past and Ishval and some moral issues around that. It also brings up Ed's temper and his tendency to run from problems (such as burning their house down) and the strain that that puts on his relationships. I'm not going to pretend there isn't a Roy/Ed bias to the fic; but it's not as one-sided as some are trying to portray it.

It's not so much that people who don't ship them are all racist. Of course that's not true. I don't ship all of them either.

It's the pattern of VEHEMENCE against these ships, continually, from the same people over and over, that raises eyebrows.

My point still stands: she didn't invent any of it. I also don't see how it's a case of singling Winry out, since the story pretty much treats it all seriously.
dragonimp: (Default)

[personal profile] dragonimp 2013-10-08 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It stood out for me. It's not her only defining trait; far from it. And I love her character. But with a wrench fling being her introduction to the story, it being her default reaction when Ed angers her by damaging the automail, her reaction to Ling when he embarrasses her, her reaction to Al when she's pissed at him after the Lab 5 incident - yes, I would call it a defining character trait.

But that's kinda beside the point. The author treats the violence seriously, but she didn't invent any of it. But she doesn't paint Winry as evil or the bad guy. Treating the violence seriously doesn't automatically make it bashing.
likeadeuce: i would like to say i'm riza at work, but I'm more like Roy. 'plotting extracurriculars! cookies for breakfast!' (mustang work day)

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2013-10-08 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I went and looked at the fic summaries and realized I had avoided the story because it's labeled 'one-sided Riza/Roy' and I can't even comprehend what that's supposed to mean.

Two women pilots, one of whose lines can be counted with the fingers of one hand and who dies the first time we actually see her in combat. And her watch had been supposed to remain unbreached for six years or somesuch. Again, it would have been really easy to make her a much more prominent character and that alone would have made a huge difference.
