It's Whedon. He's quite aware of tropes and such.

Just because they know the tropes does not mean they can do them well. Ep two was a real stinker, Sammy L Jackie apart, all that was missing was the A-Team music playing during their "escape". Old tropes, poorly used. Although I'll give it that it felt more like a pilot than the pilot and did more to introduce us to the team and world. Whedon should have saved the "how the gang got together" episode until S2 and done it in flashback.

I'll be back in mid-season, but I'm gone from the show until then.
