You can't be angry at them for knowing what their audience wants and then giving it to them. They're doing their jobs well, if anything.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure you can, especially if they start weaving all over the place trying to do whatever the audience wants at the moment. On the other hand, deliberately designing a show to be what the audience wants... no, actually, some people will still blame them for that.

It's a little silly to blame them, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. I think that shows get weaker when they start pandering (even if it's to my demographic). It's always embarrassing to me.

One of the problems with "giving the fans what they want" is that not all of the fans want the same thing. So which fans should the be listening to? Just because someone does go along with the predominant fan favorite or ships/slashes the favorite fan couple does not make that person any less of a fan.

(sorry this is sort of a pet peeve of mine)

It's Whedon. He's quite aware of tropes and such.

Just because they know the tropes does not mean they can do them well. Ep two was a real stinker, Sammy L Jackie apart, all that was missing was the A-Team music playing during their "escape". Old tropes, poorly used. Although I'll give it that it felt more like a pilot than the pilot and did more to introduce us to the team and world. Whedon should have saved the "how the gang got together" episode until S2 and done it in flashback.

I'll be back in mid-season, but I'm gone from the show until then.

Yeah... when Coulson walked back on and they gave some two-line handwave about him being clinically dead for seven seconds or something... I just.

If your canon mimics the plot and handwave of a good half of your canon's fanfics? And most of those fanfics are assumed to be badly done because of that thing? It might be time to rethink your canon.

Uh, you did realize that there's a whole subplot on HOW he's back and to quote Maria Hill "He can never know", right? Or did you just turn your TV off after that scene?

So then... don't watch it? Tumblr savior it? Tell any friends that are into it that you'd rather not talk about it/you're not into it. Problem solved.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But that would make sense. That's not the fandom way!

It's a show based on comics

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
How could it not be trope-y as all get out? Honestly, there's nothing wrong with tropes, in and of themselves, you just have to do them well.

Actually it's a show based on movies based on comics... but the point stands.

Also literally EVERYTHING has tropes. Tropes are the building blocks of stories, no?

I agree, but I don't think the tropes have been done that well. I don't know... it's just kind of tepid.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"You say trope, I say well-honed narrative tool" -John Rogers

hey man, don't knock id-fic. Kinda the POINT of it is to be viscerally satisfying, and far be it from me to bitch about a show actually going out of its way to hit my narrative kinks, how low-brow and cheap!!

not that SHIELD actually does it for me but it's not because I'm pressed about tropes

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
this show has been nothing but a poorly written disappointment which sucks because i was looking forward to it

even coulson's writing isn't that great

i hope it improves :\

Then where are all the men making out with each other? That's what fans not me truly want.

It's Joss Whedon's show, yeah? He's been baiting fans since AtS s5. Probably even before that.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, technically, it's Jed Whedon's show, which is why all the dialogue seems like watered down Whedon. Whedon Lite, if you will.

...They probably don't go on the internet that much. They're probably just regular writers.

I mean, you are aware tropes are tropes because... they're popular writing tools right? I'm just trying to figure out if you know how writing works.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe OP was talking about particular tropes within the fandom? (As opposed to tropes in general.

...is anyone really surprised about the fandom-pandering?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-10-08 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
A huge component of the show (Coulson) exists almost entirely because of fandom, and a huge chunk of their veiwerbase is the fandom, too - it's building off an extensive existing background fandom, rather different from most shows developing more independently. Is it really any surprise that they would decide some heavy-handed pandering to the fandom is a good idea? They may have erred a little TOO far on the proverbial side of caution, but that is effectively what they are doing, or at least what they were probably aiming for.
