...is anyone really surprised about the fandom-pandering?

A huge component of the show (Coulson) exists almost entirely because of fandom, and a huge chunk of their veiwerbase is the fandom, too - it's building off an extensive existing background fandom, rather different from most shows developing more independently. Is it really any surprise that they would decide some heavy-handed pandering to the fandom is a good idea? They may have erred a little TOO far on the proverbial side of caution, but that is effectively what they are doing, or at least what they were probably aiming for.
