The Bechdel Test makes a significant statement when you look at the broader number of what films do and don't pass, but it's not so good as a measuring stick for any individual story.

The Mako Mori test thing irritates me only because Mako Mori barely passes the test herself and the whole thing does reek of "We don't want to admit that Pacific Rim wasn't perfect." I didn't feel like they actually gave her as much of her own story as they could have. Like it's great that she's there and she's not a stereotyped WOC but no, I expected more after all the flailing that was going around. (And the movie had a very low percentage of females even as extras, it was just all-around almost the same old sausage party to me.)

You need to read the prequel (Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero). There's Sasha Kaidonovski, Luna Pentecost, Naomi Sokolov, and Tamsin Siever. Naomi is a badass reporter, Luna was an RAF pilot, and Tamsin was one of the original female Jaeger pilots, helping ride Coyote Tango.

I'll take one well-written female character over a bunch of stock and token characters.

The thing I liked about Mako Mori was that it was her story being told... Just through someone else. It's why Raleigh had little to no development. His story had already been told, he'd reach that place. So instead, he was supporting her through her story. And at the end, it wasn't about saving her. I'm pretty sure he wasn't counting on making it out alive, and he probably felt lucky he did. He honestly probably wanted her out of there because she was on the verge of death due to the damage the machine took. Not because he thought her weak. He thought her strong on her own merits, and that much is obvious. It's because he had such a deep respect for her based on her own merits that her situation pissed him off--he was watching someone else cut her potential short because they couldn't let go of the little girl she used to be. Yes, he stood up for her once, but because she wasn't standing up for herself and the guy was wrong, but she'd been so afraid and beaten down by being told she wasn't ready by then she believed it (when the opposite was true--she was ready and Raleigh knew it).

...Aaaand I'm TLDRing, but that's what I took from it. It's hardly perfect, no. But it's an interesting story in which the main character isn't who the story is actually about, he's just our eyes into the world so we have the necessary backstory and PoV to understand the world without an entire origins movie. Or at least that's how I interpreted it.

I should have read your comment before ranting incoherently in my own downthread. THANK YOU. Your whole second paragraph is exactly my feelings on PR after watching it. Tumblr led me to believe Mako was this amazing character who got her own story and was in control of her own life when, no, actually, she didn't even GET a proper story arc because it kinda fizzled out towards the end without any resolution. I can't understand why people are clamouring for this "Mako Mori Test" as if it's somehow more progressive to have ONE female character in a sausagefest like PR than two who actually get to talk to each other about other things apart from men.
