Yeah, honestly I hope they make out a lot (once the Katrina plot is resolved of course). The anti-shipping faction in this fandom actually irritates me more. It reminds me of the HOW DARE YOU SHIP MAKO AND RALEIGH fans in Pacific Rim.

Same here. It's kinda pushing me to embrace the ship.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
add me to that list.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
And the SHERLOCK AND JOAN ARE NOT ALLOWED TO EVER FALL IN LOVE ones in Elementary. And the FUCK YOU UHURA SHOULD NOT NEED A MAN ones in nuTrek.

I'd like some more platonic-endgame male/female duos in fiction too, but when that goes at the expense of interracial couples? Side-eying the insta-ship-haters so much.

Yeah this so much. It's interesting that the ships that fandom seems to be throwing a fit over existing are interracial? Hmmmm.

Couldn't a case be made that writers only promise ~platonic friendship~ with interracial male/female leads? Obviously that doesn't count for Uhura/Spock, but I've never seen the SHE NEEDS NO MAN argument. (But I'm not in ST fandom either).

But at least the Elementary writers keep saying that there won't be a romantic relationship between the two. Would they discount the possibility if Joan were white?

(Note: I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I'm actually one of those nasty people who seems to ship all the platonic friends (Joan/Sherlock <3) and wouldn't mind if the writers broke their promises. It's such a shame that the shows were they're not pushing for a romantic endgame are also the only ones who do chemistry between characters and believable relationships right.)

Have hope. For 7 years, Chris Carter said Mulder and Scully would never be involved and then they just sorta were together.

I'd feel bad for all the other fans for whom their platonic relationship is a major attraction, but at the same time I'm just totally convinced that Sherlock's already in love with Joan and just not doing anything about it he's her ex-client and an ex-addict and he just wants her to be happy no matter what even if it means loving her from ~afaaaaaar~.

I'm pretty sure of the ships mentioned only Joan/Sherlock promised friendship?

The rest have been left pretty up in the air. I do prefer Joan/Sherlock as friends myself, but I wouldn't drop the show or anything if they paired them. On the other hand I really like Mako/Raleigh and am kind of thinking Ichabod/Abbie is looking cute.

From the way everyone was going on about it I thought WoG said that Ichabod and Abbie would stay platonic as well. I don't actually know, I only got into the show yesterday. :P

I actually think that I'd prefer them to remain friends but that might be mostly to due to Katrina still being around. I can't see them saving her during the show as I feel that that would destroy the "only Ichabod and Abbie alone can stand against the forces of darkness" vibe, so my guess that she'll either tragically die during a season finale or that they'll save her at the very end of the show. If it's the former I might come around to Ichabod/Abbie, but as long as Katrina's around I'd prefer it if they stayed platonic.

Funny thing is, I actually thought Mako and Raleigh were together at the end of the movie. The last scene where they're drifting at sea and the jets/helicopters fly over them had such strong romantic undertones that the Team Platonic people in fandom completely caught me by surprise.

I think that's just reading for something objectionable. 2 of my best friends hate Spock/Uhura but they're both squeeing about Abbie/Ichabod. I think maybe you're just searching.

Well ST is sort of different because it has a built in fanbase for a pairing that contradicts Spock/Uhura, but I do think that saying that Uhura 'don't need a man' or whatever can be racially tinged.

But a lot of the same fans who get really bent out of shape over Ichabbie are the ones who behave that way about Joan/Sherlock and Mako/Raleigh. There is absolutely a racial component at play in some of these situations imo.

I like Spock/Uhura, but I want Abbie/Ichabod to stay platonic. It's not the slash getting in the way of this one. I just don't see any romantic sparks between them. The have great chemistry yes, but as friends more than lovers.

I would also have loved a lot of white/white couples to stay platonic. Often, espeically in movies, the love story feels tacked on, just so the hero can have a trophy to carry home and fuck after his world-saving work is done.

There are a good number of Reese/Carter shippers in the PoI fandom, and though I might not be hanging out in the right (wrong) places, there's not much bashing of the pairing or of her. (I don't ship them personally - the annoying-big-brothers dynamic she has with both Reese and Finch amuses the hell out of me - but I also think if PoI were a 'buzzy' show like SH is already turning out to be, there'd be even more fanwork for them out there.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Being in favor of it just because it involves an interracial couple is just as creepy, if not more so. Personally, I'm not a shipper, period. I wouldn't go for any of the pairings you named, and it's got nothing to do with anyone's race.

P.S. POC and in a longterm interracial relationship. It's not that I don't cheer on peoples' support for interracial couples, but it's really, really weird that anyone who doesn't support the ship gets the side-eye for being racist.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think it has more to do with seeing a pattern emerging. A new show (or movie) is set to come out and secrets appear saying the secret-maker REALLY hopes the show (or movie) will choose the platonic route because there's not enough platonic male/female dynamics represented blah, blah, blah.

Star Trek Reboot (though the vitriol - and it was vitriolic in a lot of spaces - happened AFTER the first movie was released)

Elementary

Sleepy Hallow

Meanwhile, a new show about two (or more) male dudes is set to happen and the slash fic starts being posted before the credits roll on the first episode. Of course I exaggerate, but not by much.

Hannibal, Avengers, Teen Wolf, and the granddaddy of them all, Supernatural.

It's hard not to see the anti-interracial ship going on, and for myself, there's a tinge of anti-women/hetero relationships mixed in there as well.

Like I said, after a while, you start to notice the pattern of comments and opinions.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think if you're looking for it, sure, you'll find it. If you look hard enough, you'll imagine something even if it's not there. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
People were shipping the leads of Sleepy Hollow before the credits started to roll too!

I personally don't remember people shipping for SPN before it started and people were shipping The Avengers in comics famdom for years before the film came out. Also, you're totally overlooking shows with white leads that people wanted to stay platonic (for example, liz and Jack from 30 Rock).

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I am old enough to have been against the Scully/Mulder ship too.

Some of us would just like to see a male-female professional relationship on screen that doesn't turn romantic. At least I've got Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson to get me through.

This so much.

I have mixed feelings myself. I'm a black woman in an interracial relationship, and the fact that concept is still so very rare I'm ecstatic to have any sort of black woman/white man representation in the media. It's not like I'm OBLIGATED to ship them, but it does make me feel a bit better knowing I'm represented in any sort of positive manner.

[personal profile] iggy 2013-10-08 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not so much that people who don't ship them are all racist. Of course that's not true. I don't ship all of them either.

It's the pattern of VEHEMENCE against these ships, continually, from the same people over and over, that raises eyebrows.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty vehement about a lot of pairings that I see as platonic. Mulder/Scully is a classic case, and ditto any Holmes/Watson pairing. Race has nothing to do with it, I'm just more interested in seeing stories where people can be best friends rather than romantic partners. Maybe the people you're thinking of are not-so-closeted racists... or maybe they're like me.
