I think the issue here is that being told that someone did awful things all for you not only makes a shitty justification (well, if we're talking specifically about Victoria), but it also shifts the blame partly onto you. I love my mother, but I would hate to hear her tell me she was accomplice to/engineered a tragedy with a body count and then institutionalized a little girl for me. I would feel worse about it than if she hadn't done those things.

Plus Victoria often identifies threats to her children that are no such thing, like Declan. Her kids are grown up and she still tries to manipulate their lives as she sees fit.
