It doesn't matter if you are living pretty well.

I came across a post where someone posted a pic of a homeless white man sleeping on a park bench with the sarcastic tag line of, "At least I have my white privilege!" and some reblogged it with the completely serious comment of, "You know at least he's being treated better than homeless POCS because he's white."

So, which class you are in doesn't matter.

A homeless man will be seen as having more privilege than a POC millionaire because that homeless man is white at least according to tumblr. (I don't know how they are so blind to the fact that ultimate power color is not white but green. You have money, you have privilege over all who don't. It doesn't matter what color you skin is.)

Different anon agrees with you too.

Oh, man. That's something that really annoys me about SJWs on tumblr.

"I'M A MINORITY AND I DON'T EXIST TO EDUCATE [INSERT PRIVILEGED GROUP HERE]. THEY SHOULD ALREADY KNOW THEIR PRIVILEGES! IT'S COMMON SENSE!"

Uh....no. How the hell are people supposed to know they're doing something wrong if you don't tell them? People can't be educated on things they don't know exist. Just yelling at them and calling them "privileged scum" isn't going to get the point across. :/

It makes even less sense when you consider the internet is, y'know, a vast network of information. Don't want to educate somebody? Link them to an article or FAQ that does. It takes about ten seconds of your time.

If you link someone to an explaination and they're STILL being ignorant, THEN you can get mad.

It's like that person I saw on tumblr, who claimed to be ftm trans but kept dressing in a stereotypically female way and then was bitching all the time that people were using the wrong pronouns when meeting them for the first time.

Listen, I'll use every (reasonable) pronoun you want, but unless you present in a way that's easily recognisable, you can't expect everyone to magically guess your gender identity.

Or maybe because they were taking real courses instead of Gender Studies.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
haha oh snap.

that reminds me of a post i saw on a feminism blog, where a girl was complaining that her father was sexist because he didn't support her majoring in gender studies.
gee i wonder why a parent would be wary of spending $40,000+ to send their daughter to university course so that she can end up with a mostly useless degree!

I'd never realised this before. Excellent way to separate those who care about helping people from those who just want a spot in the oppression olympics...

How do they know he's being treated better just from a photo of him sleeping on a bench? Was it a special Bench of White Privilege?
