Does an f!s confession count as non-fandom?

I don't think we, as a general community, are as nice and accepting as we pretend to be. There are some nice people here, and maybe we're better than many places on the internet but we can get pretty nasty and ignorant.

I'm not whining. I'm not sure I'd even like it if it was super nice. I just think we shouldn't pretend it's something that it isn't.

The whole "F!S is so nice" thing has always confused me. There are for sure a few nice people here, and some people are nice on odd days here and there, but overall this place is just like anywhere else. There's nasty ignorant assholes aplenty. There's also this whole clique feel among several members, which saying that will probably get me laughed at but whatever.

ayrt - I won't laugh at you. I think it's natural to feel that way and maybe it's true. I think most people here are blunt, and sometimes they'll say exactly how they feel, and it happens to be a nice thing, but other times it's really dickish. We also have the tendency to, well, assume a lot about an OP based on a two-sentence secret. I've had people I'm usually friendly with say some pretty aggressive/sarcastic/argumentative things in my secret threads. I don't really take it personally, because I know it's the secret they're talking to, and not me. I guess it's just funny how much someone will reveal about themselves when they don't know who they're talking to. I'm probably guilty of it as well.

I have so been guilty of this. It's not something to be proud of but I'm not going to deny that I tend to be more of a dick on secrets then when actually talking to someone.

That is probably at least for me, because when I comment on the secret I comment on a text (even if I know someone did write it) and not commenting to an individual, and that makes me less nice than when I talk to a person.

I think sometimes when the same people respond to each other, people can read it as being an exclusive group and feel intimidated, but I personally don't know of any that really are like that, 'troll posse' included.

I think we are that nice... compared to many peoples experiences on the shitty ends of fandom (looking at you extra hard tumblr)

I mean, I know we get pretty shitty ourselves. We do. Just in comparison... it's not as bad.

In my experience the "nice" places people go to, are the places where everything is heavily censored and you get jumped on if you manage to say something that might possibly maybe be taken the wrong way. All in the name of doing the right thing of course, bullying isn't okay no matter what. (telling people that they did something wrong in a nice way is completely different)

I do mean that people should be nice to each other and all that, but as long as you don't purposely say something mean, why should you be jumped on for it?

F!S is the nicest place I go to too btw!

Re: your subject line-- probably, but it's been on my mind lately, and I was actually going to make an unpopular opinions thread just so I could say it, before I saw this.

I definitely don't think it's the worst place on the internet. I still come here a lot, and I'm not about to start policing the way people talk, or leave because I got into a couple of heated arguments. I just think you need a bit of a thick skin around here.

So what are these nicer places?

I think we need a thick skin around THIS WORLD.

What are these other places? Cause I'm with making_excuses on this one. I'll bet those are "safe places" that are heavily sterilized. And many of those have a lot less nice then you think if you stray too far from groupthink.

Yeah, the niceness of FS is relative, but we don't live in a perfect word so take what you can get I guess.

I mean the other day a whole slew of people came out and said they had mixed feelings on abortion on not a single one of them was told to kill themselves! Amazing! FS is growing out of its Straw Liberal College Years. What's left over isn't great, but yanno. Baby Steps.

On YouTube someone told me "prolife all the way, you sound like the type who'd drown a puppy for $5. Your mom should have aborted all the way" because I told her she was a misogynist for thinking men should be able to stop women from having an abortion

IDK, maybe it's just because I'm not following/followed by many people, but tumblr is pretty much the most low-key and relaxing social interaction I get online.

FS is about as close to the shitty ends of fandom as I usually tread.

I must say, it's the same for me. This is actually the nicest place I've been on the Internet in years. I used to mod a FMA comm way back on 2005 and it was super amazing, but it died out ages ago. And then I used to hang out with my RP buddies... who ended up being this SUPER SHITTY people.

And Tumblr just plain sucks for communication.

There's a reason I look forward to every daily update :/

I think it's more mellow (well, usually) than overtly nice. People here seem pretty live-and-let-live about most things, but there's kind of, I don't know, a culture of directness or something. I think that's a nice combination. :)

Well, it's not all sunshine and rainbows, but this place is generally nicer than other places I've been. Or maybe I just generally agree with people around here more.

Well, no, maybe not, but I do like the environment here.

I think f!s was a hell of a lot meaner back when it was on lj. It's a lot smaller here on dw, but I find it cozier.
