yes, being overweight is unhealthy, but there are plenty of unhealthy behaviors that don't get the same amount of shaming that overweight--never mind obese--people get. Until that changes, I will always view the health argument as a rationalization for thinking fatties are gross because.

Seriously - look at smokers or drug users. why do people never shame them?

I have to agree with this. I'm not going to ignore everything science says about weight but generally people are not doing this out of honest concern for the health of overweight or obese people.

also what people don't get is....shaming and judging behaviors won't help...they'll probably make the person feel worse.

I'm saying this as someone with a quick metabolism but got kinda pudgy due to comfort eating in high school because there wasn't a day that went by that I wasn't treated as something to point and giggle at by at least one person because I was in the special ed program and people acted like it defined me. I had trouble with social stuff so I turned to food. Someone thinking they could "cure" me by calling me a gross pig would be not only an asshole, but a stupid asshole lacking on understanding of basic cause and effect. A lot of people pretend like they actually believe their assholery will change or "fix" someone, but honestly they're just looking for excuses.

People may say "well if they don't like it just exercise." Yeah it's not that easy for some people who have health and metabolism problems. Sometimes weight doesn't go away. People can not eat that much and put on more weight than others would. Getting on a treadmill won't magically make pounds go away. Being concerned about someone's health is one thing, but using "b-but health" as a rationalization for looking on down on people and calling them pigs or hideous or gross is fuckall awful.

Also as much as extreme obesity is unhealthy our society has an unhealthy view of what people (often women) are supposed to be like. In another country they started using mannequins that were size 12 and 14 and a lot of people complained that they were condoning 'obesity' ...by...not having mannequins that looked like fucking barbie dolls.

tl;dr: some people get into a habit of overeating because they feel shitty. making them feel more shitty is not going to magically make them lose weight.

I agree with this, but at the same time I think it's really unreasonable to push the idea that obesity is okay. We don't have to shame people, we can encourage them. Difference between negative reinforcement and positive reinforcement. But it still stands that making it seem like obesity is normal or that it's even common for it to be genetic and out of their control is just harmful.
