It's not about size it's about health! (fat activism)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Except it turns out it's totally about size http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23491523

The 'healthy obese' it turns out are young and rarely stay 'healthy'.

Re: It's not about size it's about health! (fat activism)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i think most people (except tumblr idiots) know that being obese is not good for your health.

Not only do tumblr idiots think it's possible to be both obese and healthy, they also don't seem to be able to differentiate between "a little bit overweight" and "obese".

But but but - thisisthinprivilege.tumblr.com told me the modern concept of "health" is bullshit and fat people can't ever be unhealthy, ever! The mere idea of health is oppression!

oh my goodness, that tumblr. I try to be understanding of people's stories but sometimes people will submit "as an overweight child my mother started giving me very small portions, thin privilege is not being denied food" and I'm just like...welllll....D:

...except it's very likely that someone's mother started putting them on a diet that left the kid hungry all the time. That is, they were giving them too small portions. There are a lot of people who pass their body issues onto their kids.

I totally believe that some fat kid had a parent who literally denied them food.

The activists are not going to care. It's not like they have cared about the numerous studies that prove that everyone will lose weight if they cut down on the food and calories they eat. The activists are special exceptions to the rule and none of this concerns them.

Re: It's not about size it's about health! (fat activism)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Studies do not prove that "everyone" will lose weight if they cut down on food and calories. (Does anyone eat calories outside food? Are we counting beverages separately? Anyway.) Some people do have medical conditions that keep them from losing weight. It's not as common as some people may claim, but it does exist. (Say they have a huge abdominal tumor. Say they're pregnant.) It's is not "everyone".

yes, being overweight is unhealthy, but there are plenty of unhealthy behaviors that don't get the same amount of shaming that overweight--never mind obese--people get. Until that changes, I will always view the health argument as a rationalization for thinking fatties are gross because.

Seriously - look at smokers or drug users. why do people never shame them?

I have to agree with this. I'm not going to ignore everything science says about weight but generally people are not doing this out of honest concern for the health of overweight or obese people.

Re: It's not about size it's about health! (fat activism)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
also what people don't get is....shaming and judging behaviors won't help...they'll probably make the person feel worse.

I'm saying this as someone with a quick metabolism but got kinda pudgy due to comfort eating in high school because there wasn't a day that went by that I wasn't treated as something to point and giggle at by at least one person because I was in the special ed program and people acted like it defined me. I had trouble with social stuff so I turned to food. Someone thinking they could "cure" me by calling me a gross pig would be not only an asshole, but a stupid asshole lacking on understanding of basic cause and effect. A lot of people pretend like they actually believe their assholery will change or "fix" someone, but honestly they're just looking for excuses.

People may say "well if they don't like it just exercise." Yeah it's not that easy for some people who have health and metabolism problems. Sometimes weight doesn't go away. People can not eat that much and put on more weight than others would. Getting on a treadmill won't magically make pounds go away. Being concerned about someone's health is one thing, but using "b-but health" as a rationalization for looking on down on people and calling them pigs or hideous or gross is fuckall awful.

Also as much as extreme obesity is unhealthy our society has an unhealthy view of what people (often women) are supposed to be like. In another country they started using mannequins that were size 12 and 14 and a lot of people complained that they were condoning 'obesity' ...by...not having mannequins that looked like fucking barbie dolls.

tl;dr: some people get into a habit of overeating because they feel shitty. making them feel more shitty is not going to magically make them lose weight.

I agree with this, but at the same time I think it's really unreasonable to push the idea that obesity is okay. We don't have to shame people, we can encourage them. Difference between negative reinforcement and positive reinforcement. But it still stands that making it seem like obesity is normal or that it's even common for it to be genetic and out of their control is just harmful.

Hi, I'm fat

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-10-10 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
You can be fat and healthy, but it requires a complete diet (that is, not just a vitaminless carb pile) and exercise. Basically fat health is that one chick on your college rugby team, not an angry activist typing away at starbucks.

The problem here is threefold.

First, a lot of people arguing with them are assholes like yourself. What's going on in your life that you have to poke at fat people? Is that the only thing you can hold yourself above? "I may be a loser spending time on a weird dreamwidth postsecrets knockoff but at least I'm not fat!" The problem goes beyond you being a jerk, though; if the only people arguing with fat activism are assholes, of course they'll feel vindicated.

The second problem is the fact that fat activism goes beyond body acceptance (which is awesome) into weird territory that basically amounts to a bunch of very privileged people trying to buy into tumblr oppression* without actually being oppressed. Thus healthy body acceptance gets warped into weird yelling at skinny chicks.

Third, they're convincing a lot of young fat girls that nobody will ever love them (outside other fat people). If people had been telling me that in high school I'm not sure I'd be where I am today. I certainly wouldn't be doing all this public speaking I'm apparently too oppressed to be allowed to do without ridicule. I dealt with enough self hatred on my own; an internet echo chamber would have spiritually killed me.

*not entirely accurate--this started before tumblr--but let's face it I'm sure the people you're angry at were on tumblr

On top of that

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-10-10 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I only went to the gym after I stopped hating myself a little. If you tell people they should be ashamed of themselves, that they are a disgrace, they really are not going to want to be seen in public.

Guess what most good exercise requires?

Re: Hi, I'm fat

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Except that's not true.

Fat in and of itself in any real percentage is bad for you and with negative health outcomes, even if it's going to be as simple as the fact you're carrying the equivalent of a 100lbs flour bag around with you everyday will destroy your joints.

Yes the skinny girl with the crazy metabolism who spends all day eating cheeseburgers isn't going to be much healthier than you but that is just part of thin doesn't equal healthy, not that fat doesn't equal unhealthy.

But...no. The three-hundred pound person who's nothing but solid muscle is different from the three-hundred pound guy who's just fat. People trying to get healthy need to replace fat with muscle where they can, not just lose mass. Shit, I forget where I found that story where a woman changed her entire body shape by doing just that, but ended up weighing the same as before she started getting healthy, only now she was completely fit. That's the point of health over size, as I've interpreted it - people need to stop obsessing over raw numbers and actually pay attention to what's going on with their body's needs.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
In my state, the schools are now weighing and measuring children and sending out fat-shaming letters to parents/families. They sent the first of these letters to a 127 lbs, 5'2, volleyball player who was skinny as a rail. The weight was pure muscle.

The girl was horrified. Her parents were, naturally, outraged.

On the other hand, there's evidence that you're more likely to survive certain chronic diseases if you're obese, so you win some, you lose some, what the fuck ever.

If someone isn't also kicking up a fuss trying to ban cigarettes (which I don't think they should) then they can just back the fuck up off fat people. Other people's weight ain't anybody's business but their own.
