Hi, I'm fat

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-10-10 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
You can be fat and healthy, but it requires a complete diet (that is, not just a vitaminless carb pile) and exercise. Basically fat health is that one chick on your college rugby team, not an angry activist typing away at starbucks.

The problem here is threefold.

First, a lot of people arguing with them are assholes like yourself. What's going on in your life that you have to poke at fat people? Is that the only thing you can hold yourself above? "I may be a loser spending time on a weird dreamwidth postsecrets knockoff but at least I'm not fat!" The problem goes beyond you being a jerk, though; if the only people arguing with fat activism are assholes, of course they'll feel vindicated.

The second problem is the fact that fat activism goes beyond body acceptance (which is awesome) into weird territory that basically amounts to a bunch of very privileged people trying to buy into tumblr oppression* without actually being oppressed. Thus healthy body acceptance gets warped into weird yelling at skinny chicks.

Third, they're convincing a lot of young fat girls that nobody will ever love them (outside other fat people). If people had been telling me that in high school I'm not sure I'd be where I am today. I certainly wouldn't be doing all this public speaking I'm apparently too oppressed to be allowed to do without ridicule. I dealt with enough self hatred on my own; an internet echo chamber would have spiritually killed me.

*not entirely accurate--this started before tumblr--but let's face it I'm sure the people you're angry at were on tumblr

On top of that

I only went to the gym after I stopped hating myself a little. If you tell people they should be ashamed of themselves, that they are a disgrace, they really are not going to want to be seen in public.

Guess what most good exercise requires?

Except that's not true.

Fat in and of itself in any real percentage is bad for you and with negative health outcomes, even if it's going to be as simple as the fact you're carrying the equivalent of a 100lbs flour bag around with you everyday will destroy your joints.

Yes the skinny girl with the crazy metabolism who spends all day eating cheeseburgers isn't going to be much healthier than you but that is just part of thin doesn't equal healthy, not that fat doesn't equal unhealthy.

You're kind of moving the goalposts a bit here. Nobody is arguing that it's healthy to be 100 pounds over the max proper weight for your frame. But you can totally be a plus size and be healthy. You're going to say "but Chard! That's not fat!" and I'm going to tell you that's bullshit look around you.

Also: why the hell do you care? Honestly answer that question.

"Fat in and of itself in any real percentage is bad for you and with negative health outcomes"

HA....HA....SERIOUSLY?

this sounds a lot like you're saying "any fat is bad" which is not true and massively unhealthy

They are also saying they hate boobs and ass.

Anon, why do you hate boobs and ass?

Did a fat lady twerk at you as a child?

Stop bodyshaming Brian.

I'm clearly not. Brian has fat because it's essential for him. How much or how little is his choice, but he's got a MedicAlert bracelet that reads "fat required" and everything.

(We will not discuss how many typos I had to correct in making this comment. I believe this is a sign that I need to stop talking.)

Fat in and of itself in any real percentage

We can have this conversation as soon as you explain what the fuck this phrase means. A "real percentage"? Anon, any percentage is a real percentage, and if you don't have any fat on you, it's because you have died and you are literally a pile of bones.
