Re: It's not about size it's about health! (fat activism)

But...no. The three-hundred pound person who's nothing but solid muscle is different from the three-hundred pound guy who's just fat. People trying to get healthy need to replace fat with muscle where they can, not just lose mass. Shit, I forget where I found that story where a woman changed her entire body shape by doing just that, but ended up weighing the same as before she started getting healthy, only now she was completely fit. That's the point of health over size, as I've interpreted it - people need to stop obsessing over raw numbers and actually pay attention to what's going on with their body's needs.

In my state, the schools are now weighing and measuring children and sending out fat-shaming letters to parents/families. They sent the first of these letters to a 127 lbs, 5'2, volleyball player who was skinny as a rail. The weight was pure muscle.

The girl was horrified. Her parents were, naturally, outraged.

Oh wow...that just makes me a little angry. That's awful.

She's in middle school. You can't tell me that that's not going to leave a mark.

I'm horrified that they think 127 lbs is obese for ANYBODY.

That was my reaction. The fuck?

I also have no idea what good they think the letters will do, unless they think the parents literally never see their children.

That's almost verbatim what the middle schooler's mom said. Also, she pointed out that the fat kids know they're fat. They probably feel badly enough without the state embarrassing them.

yeah in fact that's what my rents have suggested I slim down too. So hearing someone shame a person for that is just...ick. Honest to God ick.

Yeah. 127 is not fat, especially when the object in question is in about the seventh grade, skinny as a rail, and might do well with five or ten more pounds.

But then, our current anti-fat trend (No exceptions! And no sympathy for the those fat bastards who are trying!) strikes me as adult on adult bullying or adult on child bullying, in this case.

But the BMI chart said so! /sarcasm

This reminds me of people who tell me to lose weight.

Yeah, no, I don't want to be anorexic. Thanks.

I hope the parents made such a fuss and took it to the district. Someone better have gotten in trouble for that shit.

The parents are making a fuss but, so far, the school district's response of 'We were only trying to help! Look! Our form letter says that it might be a health concern and that she should follow up with a personal physician.' seems to be going over well with the local news stations and community. Apparently, it's okay to tell a middle schooler that she's hideously obese if you have good intentions.

I just don't get it!

This makes me so upset. Fuck that school.

The entire county is apparently doing it! And nowhere along the line did it occur to anyone that this might be a really terrible idea.

If this was two kids on the playground, we'd say the name-caller was a bully. I don't see why it's okay to treat people the exact same way if it's two adults, an adult and a child, or the state and a child. And to add insult to injury, the letter apparently doesn't even offer programs or enticements to help the target out. It's just a record of being found fat.

And that right there is a perfect example of why prioritizing size over health leads to stupid shit.
