Fanfic in German?

[personal profile] rosehiptea 2013-10-10 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
So I've discovered I enjoy practicing my German by reading fanfic. Mostly I read RPS for a German rock band, which is obviously easy to find in German, but I'm thinking of branching out into other fandoms. Does anybody have any recs?

I like Pokemon, Attack on Titan, Harry Potter, some old classic anime like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop.

I'd really, really prefer short one-shots but if it's good I'll take what you've got. Any type of pairing, any rating.

(I realize fanfic isn't necessarily the source for excellent grammar, but I'm still working on basic grammar and vocabulary, and I'm only learning for fun anyway.)

I might be able to dig up some old Harry Potter fics I enjoyed before I switched to English speaking fandom, but the three that immediately come to mind are long fics and I can't make too many promises on their quality. Grammar and spelling should be fine, but I'm warning you, the different terminology of wizard things is a bitch.

Unfortunately if they're long I probably wouldn't be able to get through them, so I won't put you to the trouble of looking them up. Thanks though!

(That didn't occur to me about wizarding terminology. I wonder if there's a good way to look it up.)

Well, I tried to find them anyway because I'm contrary like that. :P And I found out that apparently I did delete my fanfiktion.de account, so.

Anyway, in case you ever do want to read something longer the first one I thought about was Der Herr der Zeit, but it's over 300,000 words long. (HP/DM, IIRC) By the same author is the one-shot Jäger der Nacht (HP/DM); I haven't read that one but it's on the favourite list of an author I used to like. I'm 99% sure that that author is Witchcraft, but I remember her for her Harry/Bill fic which I now can't find again and all her HP fics seem to be HP/DM. You can check her favs list to see if something grabs your fancy.

(Some translations are completely self-explanatory - the Leaky Cauldron is Der Tropfende Kessel, the Shrieking Shack is Die Heulende Hütte. Trickier are things like pensieves (Denkarium). But the internet and fandom being what they are, somebody compiled a handy list!)

Unfortunately I'm not sure I could even make it through a fic that long in English, which is my native language. But I'll definitely check out the one-shot.

Thank you so much for the list, too! That's exactly what I was looking for.

(And now I know how to say Regurgitating Public Toilet in German... Yay?)

I was thinking of getting an account, but I don't know if anyone wants reviews in somewhat bad German from an American. (I actually do have a bandom fic I wrote in German that my friend edited but putting it up would probably seem weird too.)

I don't have any specific fanfics to recommend, but animexx has a pletora of fanfic in German. Maybe you'll find something over there?

Unless animexx has changed a *lot* since I was on there it might not be the best place to look for fic in your case. Apparently they have now a beta search function like FFN, so who knows, maybe things did change, but back in my day the grammar in most fics was shaky at best. Think FFN, but worse.

Though I admit that it's been a decade since I've been on animexx. But still, take their grammar with a grain of salt.

Fair warning.

And yeah, that was one reason I didn't try looking for German fics on ff.net, though there are some. I don't even hate ff.net but it's certainly not a place to look for random stories and hope for good English grammar.
