Re: She's just not believable
Sure there are hot, socially-adjusted coders out there (my brother's a top tier programmer who worked as a male model when he was younger and is entirely comfortable around the opposite sex, so I know this to be true - they aren't all basement-dwelling morlocks) but they still love coding. The only piece of tech Skye has with her seems to be her phone and she's fine with that, whereas my brother would have already torn apart his living space to make it more ergonomic for typing, scrounged up every power bar he could find, immediately leapt in on improving the ship's systems (she's better than whoever they've got at SHIELD, ostensibly) - yet when she has free time she spends it waffling around doing nothing unsure of how to help until they make her a field agent. WHY WOULD YOU MAKE - OSTENSIBLY - THE BEST HACKER IN YOUR ENTIRE ORGANIZATION A FIELD AGENT?!
She doesn't talk about computers, she doesn't talk about tech, she doesn't talk about coding, she doesn't spend any time doing it either - when she does crack something it's handwaved off-screen as if by magic - and shows no interest in the trade in which she's supposedly one of the best on the planet. When someone says she must have put a lot of time into coding (and so understands that most things take hard work) she brushes it off with "it comes naturally".
NO. NOOOOOOO. Sure, the skill itself my come naturally, but hacking into someone's systems means constantly altering your own code to subvert their constantly improving security systems. Someone on the other end to whom "it comes naturally" is reacting to you. IT TAKES HOURS. DAYS.
So... you have the world's best hacker, who never codes, isn't interested in computers, and owns no hardware more advanced than a smartphone. Whom SHIELD immediately puts in the field to physically infiltrate target locations and fight in hand-to-hand combat.
GOOD WRITING GUYS!!!!!! GOLD STAR FOR EVERYONE!!!!
Honestly just about the only thing that could salvage the character for me now is a reveal that she's just a front for the actual hacker who's doing all this shit. (Which SHIELD knows, but they think they can draw him or her out if they keep putting Skye in dangerous situations.)
Ugh, she's almost as horribly-written as Ward, the Least Believable Field Agent of All Time.

Re: She's just not believable
Skye is one of the most ill-conceived and poorly-written characters I have ever seen. Her supposed skills as a hacker are why she was recruited by Coulson, or so he says, but she only hacked two systems that we know of (SHIELD and a DMV database in the pilot). She never says anything that even remotely indicates that she possesses the sort of advanced knowledge of computers and programming that she claims to have. In the third episode there was a perfect opportunity to have Skye hack into Quinn's security system and force it to reboot, but that task was given to Fitz while the "expert" was off ineptly impersonating a spy. It's confusing and annoying, to say the least.
The problems I've had accepting the idea that Skye is some sort of computer genius have been compounded by the writing. The other characters have summarily dismissed her offers to help them out by finding info or hacking systems on several occasions. Coulson waved her off in the second episode, Ward beat her to the info on the excavator in the third and May just handed her a stack of printouts and ordered her to read them. Skye's sole contribution in the way of "hacking" was getting herself an e-vite to Quinn's stockholder meeting through an encrypted website. Even that was down to her connections to Rising Tide.
The weak writing for Skye wouldn't matter so much if she weren't quite obviously the main character on the show. Sometimes I want to rant at Tancheroen & Whedon on Twitter: This show exists because fans made Coulson Lives! a viral campaign. So why isn't Phil Coulson the main character on this damned show? Skye & The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't the show they sold us on and it isn't working well.
