THIS X 1000

Skye is one of the most ill-conceived and poorly-written characters I have ever seen. Her supposed skills as a hacker are why she was recruited by Coulson, or so he says, but she only hacked two systems that we know of (SHIELD and a DMV database in the pilot). She never says anything that even remotely indicates that she possesses the sort of advanced knowledge of computers and programming that she claims to have. In the third episode there was a perfect opportunity to have Skye hack into Quinn's security system and force it to reboot, but that task was given to Fitz while the "expert" was off ineptly impersonating a spy. It's confusing and annoying, to say the least.

The problems I've had accepting the idea that Skye is some sort of computer genius have been compounded by the writing. The other characters have summarily dismissed her offers to help them out by finding info or hacking systems on several occasions. Coulson waved her off in the second episode, Ward beat her to the info on the excavator in the third and May just handed her a stack of printouts and ordered her to read them. Skye's sole contribution in the way of "hacking" was getting herself an e-vite to Quinn's stockholder meeting through an encrypted website. Even that was down to her connections to Rising Tide.

The weak writing for Skye wouldn't matter so much if she weren't quite obviously the main character on the show. Sometimes I want to rant at Tancheroen & Whedon on Twitter: This show exists because fans made Coulson Lives! a viral campaign. So why isn't Phil Coulson the main character on this damned show? Skye & The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't the show they sold us on and it isn't working well.

I'm relieved that I'm not the only one; both here and on the io9 (a den of Whedon and Marvel-loving fans if there ever was one) there's been a ton of resounding disappointment, and much of it revolves around Skye (and Ward). That gives me hope that maybe, just maybe - since the show came about due to fan reaction in the first place - that they'll listen to the fans and do something about it.
