I'm that way about Jesse Pinkman. I treasure his suffering sfm even while I'm asking 'Why always him?'

I choose one person in every fandom I have ever been in who is that. They also tend to be the one I ship with every one.

Different characters but yeah, me too. I think it's fairly common though (considering how enthusiastically fan favourites tend to get beaten up / tortured / etc. in fics).

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I get the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't that the reason why we have the wooby? As in often being one of the more popular characters (besides the badass, better yet if they combine). I also often feel like this about my favourite characters but over the years I got the sense that this was actually a really common reaction (also hence, woobifying fic and author commentary about loving to hurt them and the whole hurt/comfort or just hurt/hurt category of fanfic).

This sounds a lot like whump fic or hurt/comfort? This is a whole genre of fanfiction I have to actively work to avoid, OP. Not uncommon at all :)
starphotographs: ...I'm not that bad, though. And I don't even light things on fire! Well, not regularly... (Izaya (devious))

[personal profile] starphotographs 2013-10-10 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
...I'd think you were me, but I've never seen Farscape. (Though apparently, I should!)

It's fun from the other side, too! One of my favorite things to write is "narrator gets his ass handed to him by life." LOL.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-10 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that is the feeling of your id being tickled. I love it too. It can be erotic, but it doesn't need to be. It can also be romantic, sad, exiting etc. I think it's the whole point of tropes like star crossed lovers for instance.

I love seeing characters get put through the wringer, beaten black and blue, getting emotionally hurt and all that. It makes it seem so much better when they win through in the end, unlike series like Star Trek TNG or Marvel's Agent's of Shit (yeah, I'm just picking on it now for sake of being mean) where you are never in any doubt that they'll win and frankly it seems like a cheaply won victory. Now a series which spends forty minutes kicking its lead character in the gender appropriate genitalia before finally letting them, bedraggled and bruised, claim victory. That had stakes worth watching for.

You are still a dirty perv, OP, for watching Farscape though. That show is just one big BDSM orgy.

Question for everybody

Would anyone be interested in a Farscape marathon livestream sometime? Not instead of shitstream (unless Noodle is interested) but just a goddamn Farscape marathon.

Fingal: your thoughts?

I might be in. I love Farscape and don't have enough people to flail about it with.

I'd definitely join in if you went past season 1! I always watch season 1 and then lose momentum

I've got to say, sometimes I'm just not happy unless my fandom bb is crying. But then I cry too, and they aren't always happy tears. Go figure.

Well, I am suddenly interested in watching Farscape.

(You should watch Breaking Bad, anon. I have a feeling you will love Jesse Pinkman.)

Farscape secret <3

Farscape is good for emotional and physical whumpage.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
So, tell them you don't like BDSM. Say that you like tragedy, or hurt/comfort. Without BDSM.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
So I get that liking watching characters get sent through the wringer is pretty common, I never thought it wasn't. But do other people get that gut-wrenchy feeling, too? Because I've never really seen it described anywhere. It's like my innards are turning somersaults, and I'm all "YES! Punch Chrichton again! I want to walk away from this with a stomach ache!".
