I've never in my life heard that it's rude to cosplay something that isn't necessarily from an anime. o_O I've only ever cosplayed from video games, and I've gotten nothing but praise for it. Cosplay what you want, people will love it.

I remember it used to be very rare to see a non-Japanese sourced cosplay (video game characters were plentiful, since there is an overlap between the video game and Anime fandom especially for games made in Japan like Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy and so on), but lately I see all kinds of cosplayers at anime cons, you might not get as many requests to have your picture taken but I don't think it's rude by any means.
