Cosplay what you want!! Not sure how you got the idea that it's "rude" but as a long-time con-goer and cosplayer, it's not! Just do your best, do what you love!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never in my life heard that it's rude to cosplay something that isn't necessarily from an anime. o_O I've only ever cosplayed from video games, and I've gotten nothing but praise for it. Cosplay what you want, people will love it.

How is it rude? I'm not trying to be snarky, I just don't get it. At the cons I've been to no one cared what other peope cosplayed, or if they did they kept it to themselves.

In my experience, people don't really care hat you cosplay as as long as the cosplay is good. (I have cosplayed at anime conventions as video game characters and superheroes, nd no one gave me shit.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never been to an anime-only con, but I've seen lots of people on cosplay.com post non-anime/manga stuff, so there's clearly lots of crossover.

Cosplay what you want or cosplay an old school character. One that you used to love when you were younger. Everyone loves the classics.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Cosplay a character you used to like, then. Or cosplay a video game character--I don't know who told you it's rude, but video game characters are everywhere at anime conventions. Lots of them from Final Fantasy and Zelda, at least.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. I go to several cons a year, mostly ones that are billed as being anime cons, and you'll always end up seeing a huge array of pretty much anything and everything. Things like panels and workshops and guest signings and merchandise might end up being more anime-specific, but the cosplay is still more or less anything goes.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
if it's a japanese game then it's 'acceptable' Disney characters are also acceptable through kingdom hearts.

...if people say it's "rude", they are really stupid. You can cosplay whatever you want.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
There has been a healthy mix of people dressed as anime characters, game characters, various other comic/cartoon characters, general steampunk, general goth/goth-loli/lolita, in fursuits, etc. at every anime convention I've ever been to.

A few years back, I wore a rather blatantly store-bought Halloween costume to one because I just wanted to dress up and didn't have anything else. And I think I got more compliments on that outfit than anything else I'd ever worn.

Wear what you want to wear and have fun!

Whoever told you that is a bag of dicks, and also wrong. I've often appreciated non-anime cosplays precisely because they're something different - it means they had to put that little extra thought into it, you know? As long as it's not screamingly offensive, cosplay whatever you want. You'll be fine. ♥

Never knew it was rude. But hey, if you're really struggling why not cosplay from a video game that comes from the Japanese or Korean markets or something. (I'm assuming you're into at least one?) Or maybe since you used to be into anime maybe you can cosplay one of your old favorite shows?

Fact is though, you could cosplay the Doctor at an anime and no one will care. I took a picture of one at a con once. I had to ask him if that's who he really was because it confused me at first but once he confirmed my guess I was right on board.

The quantity of Doctors and Cecils and pixellated Minecraft tools that are commonplace at anime conventions are certainly at odds with what you may have been told.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I have definitely heard people say this in the past, but it's a stupid opinion and you should pay it no mind. There are things you often can't or shouldn't do if you're going to an anime convention in a non-anime cosplay (such as entering a competition) but just going around in the costume is fine. If the thing you're cosplaying has a decent fandom there might even be a meetup/photoshoot that you can go to.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoever said it'd be rude is in the minority these days as far as I've seen. Cosplayers I know might go with non-anime outfits exclusively at cons no harm, no foul.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a friend suggest we all do a particular fannish non-anime theme at an anime convention, and I was uncertain about the suggestion because it wasn't anime but went along with it, and everyone at the convention thought we looked great and there were plenty of other people doing the same theme! Wear what you like, don't worry.

I can understand the logic (and I appreciate it, even though ultimately I don't really care) when it comes to Western media, but if you've got a character from a Japanese video game in your arsenal, it would be pretty hard for anyone to argue against that. First, don't anime cons typically have panels and events about aspects of Japanese culture that are unrelated to anime? And second, don't most popular Japanese video games have some kind of tie-in manga or anime, even if it's obscure and/or terrible?

People do it all the time. Maybe it varies from convention to convention, but I've never seen it considered "rude." I've cosplayed from Scooby-Doo and from Elfquest and most people are thrilled when they notice.

Go for it! I've gone to cons in the past and I love seeing all the various cosplayers. It doesn't matter if it's from anime or not. Cons are suppose to be fun, so wear what you want.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
It is pretty rude to be honest.

You're there for an anime, not a general geek con, dress the part.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I've cosplayed both characters from Japanese video games and Western video games at anime cons and have only gotten compliments. The 'anime only' thing may has been the attitude in the past, but it really isn't the case now.

Definitely do what you want! I went to Anime Weekend Atlanta one year and saw storm troopers, tons of characters from Kingdom Hearts, and the guy from Reno 911. Just do something you enjoy and will be comfortable in.
