It is pretty rude to be honest.

You're there for an anime, not a general geek con, dress the part.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Unusual, maybe, but how the hell do you decide that it's rude?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Rude to who though?

Overly sensitive people?

OMG! I just saw somebody dressed as a non-anime character. MY WEEKEND IS RUINED!!!

Seriously, though, I don't think I've even been to an anime convention where there *weren't* people dressed as non-anime characters.

Maybe times have changed, but all of the anime conventions I've ever been to included general geek stuff (like D&D gaming) even if anime was the main focus.

Seriously, I've been to Otakon a few times and there was everything from anime cosplayers to a Buddy Christ cosplayer, to Final Fantasy, to Nintendo controller cosplayers.

I don't consider it rude to cosplay as whatever you want, chances are that fandoms are going to overlap at an anime convention anyway.

Do you not realize how few and far between general geek cons are? Like, ones that actually cater to western media? The options are literally a) Expensive Comic Conventions like Wizard World and b) Comic and Toy shows which typically are not big enough to draw even the most desperate of cosplayers. Compare the amount of anime conventions in a state to the amount of general geek conventions in that state and you'll see why fans of all types will attend these cons.

Whoever says it's rude is spouting the hugest amount of bullshit and is probably a huge annoying turbonerd. Nobody cares if you're at Anime Milwaukee and dressed as a Homestuck, Mami-san, or a goddamn Ghostbuster. People are still going to flip their lids and love you just the same.
