I have definitely heard people say this in the past, but it's a stupid opinion and you should pay it no mind. There are things you often can't or shouldn't do if you're going to an anime convention in a non-anime cosplay (such as entering a competition) but just going around in the costume is fine. If the thing you're cosplaying has a decent fandom there might even be a meetup/photoshoot that you can go to.
