Last Night's Glee (Spoilers, TW for Death)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
So what did you all think?

My Random Things:

For some reason I keep watching "Make You Feel My Love" just for the catch in Lea's voice and Jenna breaking down completely. I guess these characters have become so cartoony that it's oddly mesmerizing to see them be human?

Also, the Tina thing pissed me off. I figured that it was going to lead to a story about how Finn encouraged her to get out of her goth phase (or just wear happier clothing), or show that her preoccupation with her clothes was a coping mechanism to avoid thinking about him dying. Whose underpants has Jenna hot-sauced for her to get this kind of treatment on the show?

I honestly had no idea Glee was even still on. I obviously have no idea what's going on but I am very much not surprised that Tina is once again getting some kind of shitty story.

I was surprised too...

Maybe Jenna pissed off Ryan Murphy and he gave her shitty scripts as revenge? Wouldn't be the first time he's done it to a cast member (well, if numerous rumors are to be believed anyway. And tbh, I don't really doubt it. That guy can be a real dickhead)

What happened with Tina?

She went to Emma for what Emma thought was going to be a grief counseling session, but went on about how she was sick of being goth or something. So that was irritating, to say the least.

Though I guess there's still room to believe she really was just trying to distract herself.

She was the only person to go to grief counseling and then said she was tired of wearing black and didn't know if she could keep doing it after she spent so much time phasing herself out of goth.

Emma handed her some pamphlets telling her to stop being self-centered, and didn't even ask about how Tina was feeling regarding Finn's death. She might have actually gotten something out of her. Way to council, Emma.

The way I read that was that she wasn't coping with Finn's death and that wearing "mourning", so to speak, wasn't helping, but that she felt like if she stopped too soon people would think she didn't care. I had huge issues with that sort of mentality after my brother died - that if I didn't show enough public grief, people would think I didn't care that he'd died, and it made the grieving process a lot harder because it's really difficult to heal and move on when you feel guilty for feeling better. It's been almost two years and I still feel a wrench when I try to write because if I can write again, that means I'm doing better, and do I have any right to feel better when my brother is dead?

Also, um, if you're trying to be a grief counsellor, someone's personal grief really is all about them. Who else is it supposed to be about? You're grieving because you lost someone you care about. It's by default all about your feelings!

I can't decide if Puck's actor is not as good as I thought or if it was just bad dialogue but his scene with Bieste was just bad. Then I remember he was probably busy grieving for real aand I feel like a bad person. Also I thought it was a dick move of Schue to not only not stand up for Puck over the jacket but to also pile on when Schue was the one who took it.

But watching him cry into it was really nice work.

I feel like the Tina thing was very, very forced comic relief more than a stab at her character. But I agree it was annoying and made no sense. Wouldn't it have made more sense for Brittany?

Mostly I feel like they're talking more about Cory than Finn. I just can't break that association. Not necessarily a criticism, just an observation.

Was Quinn even in it? I was surprised she didn't get anything.

Except given Murphy seems to not like her, maybe I'm not that surprised.

Quinn and Brittany were absent, and I don't remember why but Teen Jesus and Sugar haven't been on in ages?

Heather Morris is pregnant and Dianna Agron was doing promotional stuff for a movie she's co-starring in when they were shooting this episode. Joe and Sugar haven't been on because their winning The Glee Project only gave them a certain number of episodes.

Rumor has it she wasn't even invited. Which, if true, sucks.

I don't watch Glee normally but I kept seeing the preview, so I caved. Some of it was lost on me as I'm so not familiar with the characters and their storylines, and some still came off as poorly/weirdly executed like the Tina thing.

Their grief felt real, not surprsingly.

I liked that they didn't explicitly state how he died, since the character never had the actor's problems and it wouldn't have been natural to shoe-horn that in. But I like that they kind of implied something believable and moved on.

I thought it was sad and rather heartfelt for Glee.

I never cared much for Finn the character in the newer seasons, but Cory seemed liked a sweetheart and you could tell he was loved by the cast.

Lea breaking down while she sang made me cry. You could tell she wasn't even singing, just lip syncing through the tears :(

The Tina part was side-eye worthy, but it's Glee (and the treatment of Tina's character is usually abysmal). If they're hadn't been one part like that, I'd think I was watching a different show.

The Burt/Carole/Kurt scene was also completely heartbreaking. When they were all crying and holding each other, it felt intrusive to watch.
