I think it can be objectively good for the people who grew up with that cultural identity in the first place to do that. But for those who don't understand something at all and don't want to try to, to grab it and exploit it for their own amusement, leading to the people for whom that identity is more than just a game having to deal with the aftermath that causes the identity itself to be eroded along with the sense of ownership, leaving nothing but shallow stereotypes behind for history to remember...that's pretty fucked up, to me, and the main point of struggling against appropriation beyond immature "this is mine and I don't like sharing!"
