You don't have to grow up to know that you're unhappy. Not to mention that making decisions and either succeeding or failing in your intentions is a huge part of gaining maturity.

Being young doesn't automatically mean a person is immature or stupid or that they need to 'grow up' before making a decision that you wouldn't.

Honestly. EVERY high school student planning on postsecondary education has to make decisions regarding where they want to go and what sort of career they want to train for. It's not exactly unusual to think about where you want to go for university.

I'm not looking at the fact that she's in high school as the sole variable, here. Judging by her other responses, she's well aware of the problems she will face in Japan and how it will doubtful be better than it is here---and she doesn't care. It's blind admiration in a situation that calls for utmost discretion.

No, you don't have to grow up to know that you're unhappy, but you do have to grow up to know how to successfully and wisely solve your problems.

Let me put it this way: my roommate, freshly out of high school herself, up and relocated (with years of planning) without her parents' knowledge until we were already down here. We have been dealing with the emotional repercussions ever since. The decision to leave everything she knows, even though she doesn't think she'll miss any of it, is far huger than she imagines. She thinks she's ready, but from first-hand experience? I doubt it.

She can't know the enormity until she experiences it... but she can at least consider the advice of people who've been through it.

True enough, but if you had tried to sway your roommate from her decision back then it probably would have been impossible to convince her not to do what she did. =/ For certain the idea of the experience is very different than the reality, but I tend to be of the opinion that big mistakes can be the biggest teachers. (Which is not to say that they can't also ruin your life if you're not really careful, but they have value.)

If the OP is young she's got alot of time to plan and decide, she may change her mind entirely (like I did when I took a trip out to the other side of the country and decided that moving that far was not for me).

Just because it's an enormous change doesn't mean it will necessarily be a bad one for this individual. Clearly you think it's a bad idea that she will regret. Your opinion. I disagree, that's all.
