I've heard it lots and lots of times by now, and I'm still kind of wondering why so many people consider Melinda May to be the one good character on AoS?

Eh, I think she's the only character with potential, actually. Ward is a boring Leading Man complete with tragic backstory, while Skye and the science groupies are really annoying. Melinda May could be developed enough to probably carry the show as showrunner, though, which is probably what people are seeing. I have high hopes for her character; I've already dismissed the rest.

I honestly don't know. People are all "She has the most potential" and, yeah, she has the ~*~mysterious background~*~ thing going for her and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it revealed. But I think all of the characters have potential to grow (yes, even Skye - who probably wouldn't be getting as much flack is she were male - there I said it).

Also, I think the science twins are cute.

I'm gonna disagree with you about Skye--I think a male character with her exact same personality would be getting a pretty substantial amount of flack. Some people might excuse it, yeah, but the Intrepid Reporter stereotype is annoying on so many levels that I think they'd still be pretty hated. The same "she's too pretty" complaints might not come up as much, though.

considering most people hate ward as much as skye this is pretty inaccurate

they're both weak, terribly written characters

At least Ward has a role to fill. He might be filling it rather crappily, but team leader or 1st lieutenant (I can't tell whether Coulson is supposed to be team leader or the chief he's been kinda both, that is just bad writing there) is a valid role in a team based show. Skye is just this person who has wandered in off the street. In addition to all her other flaws, she fills no function within the structure of the show. You could lose her from every episode with minimal rewrites.

Even last episode which I'm guessing was supposed to be her breakout episode could have filled her role with Girl-Science Bunny and it would have been mostly the same. Well, the same, except that would have been interesting.

*double-checks anon* I suspect a part of the people who say that do so because she's Asian and they feel it gives them SJ cred. It's somthing of an automated fandom response. At least it sounds like that to me.

I think May has potential but so far we simply haven't seen a lot of her. The next episode seems to be more focused on her, going by the previews.

I love her best because she's the only character in the main cast who behaves like an adult and who isn't Coulson. (I like Coulson fine as a supporting character, but I'm not really enjoying his upgrade to leading man.) Somewhat related to that, I like competence in my characters, and while the four younger ones have all been established as brilliant in their fields--with varying degrees of credibility from the viewer's POV--they spend most of their time fumbling to find their way through missions and their roles in SHIELD and life. Melinda May has some heavy emotional stuff to work through, obviously, but she's nonetheless highly competent; it's a pleasure to watch her work, while the younger ones, and Ward and Skye in particular, trip my embarrassment squick on a regular basis.

The fact that Ming-Na Wen can actually act definitely doesn't hurt, either. :-)

A1 +Infinity Recommends.
