Re: Sherlock Holmes canon vs fanon

*cough* This is from a Sherlock BBC fic, so I have no idea if it has any credence whatsoever, but the nickname John "Three Continents" Watson, in reference to sexual experience? No connection to canon at all, a connection but not what the fic meant, or exactly what the fic meant?

100% canon, baby :D From The Sign Of Four:

"In an experience of women which extends over many nations and three separate continents, I have never looked upon a face which gave a clearer promise of a refined and sensitive nature."

It might also be the only time in the entire series that Watson kinda brags about himself. Usually, he only says "well, I'm not TOO dumb in such and such a field" or just quotes Holmes's praise.

Lolz, Watson's phrasing is very Victorian (see the above poster for the quote) but the implication is that yeah, his "experience" meant that he knew them more, uh, personally than just handshaking ;)

LMAO

That is an awesome nickname and now I totally want fic of one of Watson's old army buddies using it. In front of Holmes. :D

Watson's whorishness, and the fact that he totally side-steps all mentions of having any interest in women other than his wife, yet does a terrible job of hiding it with all of Holmes' comments and his drooling over every pretty woman he meets, is one of my favorite little details about this fandom. It makes me sad, however, that neither of the stories Holmes narrated had Holmes make any observations of how Watson's milkshake brought all the ladies to the yard. Alas, it all fell to Paget.

:D at that picture. Slut!Watson is the most canon Watson. And it's so frustrating that it's, like, never adapted that way (not even with Jude frickin' Law!) except in Sherlock, where it no longer counts because different time period = different culture = different implications. Nowadays, guys who have numerous lovers are normal but kinda immature. Back then, guys who had numerous lovers were considered both impressively virile and downright rakes.

This is only one of the many reasons why Martin Freeman's Watson in Sherlock is my favorite Watson in any adaptation, and also the one that I think is most faithful.

But I don't think it's that different of an implication, really, time-wise. More pronounced back then, maybe, but not fundamentally different.

I think the BBC Watson is god-fucking-awful and nothing remotely like the original Watson, but the fact that he's played by Martin Freeman almost makes up for it.

Well, I disagree, obviously... It's really about the only thing that I unreservedly, entirely like about Sherlock.

Actually, what I dislike about him is that he IS a great Watson about half the time...and then suddenly something totally nonsensical and OOC happens with him because of dramatic convenience and I'm like "wait what?"

So I take it back -- I blame the writing, not the character. (Sorry, this really should not have become a wank thread :()
