That's absolutely fanon. The real, cold and drab explanation is that ACD didn't particularly care about the details and simply forgot them, and said different things at different times. But that's so boring, and it's much more fun to say that of course Watson couldn't have been confused about where he was shot, and to come up with intricate explanations for how it all happened.

That's correct. He probably didn't even notice them, and certainly didn't care about them. Which is fine.
