So you understand WHY they are doing it, yet you still think they are just being arrogant. Why do you think Bing is always saying it is the best search engine ever? We all know it isn't, but a company isn't going to admit that.

IDK, it doesn't read like a standard commercial-type advertisement to me. It comes off as "this is a wonderful product. You should know it already. And you should feel grateful to have it [so stop complaining]."

Ads for something like Bing will say "have you heard the exciting news about this product? Let us tell you how it's the only one on the market with features X, Y, and Z! Four out of five dentists agree that it's the best!" It's a product/service they're trying to get you excited about buying, not a gift for which they're trying to guilt you into expressing more appreciation.

What sailorptah said, plus there's a world of difference between "This services is awesome, come help keep it awesome!" and "This service is the best ever, we all already know that, and all those other sites can't even offer features you *need* for this service to work, so why bother with them? It's your duty to keep this one up~!"

And there's the fact people doing advertisement know they are doing, well, advertisement and treat it as such.

On the other hand, the people talking about AO3 like that believe what they say...

AYRT

Tbh, them believing it isn't really the problem. If they think the site is great? Then that's cool, and it gives them extra motivation to try to keep the place up. It's how they act like everyone else should know it - or they're idiots of they don't agree that's really at the heart of the issue for me.

The thing is, if they think the site is so good that is perfect as it is then the site is less likely to improve and those same users create a space where any not-technical issue shouldn't be even mentioned, since everything is great according to them.
