It's the description of "none of those other platforms had the right features for an archive" that irritates me. There have been a lot of other archive sites, and some of those have features that are right, and some of those features AO3 doesn't have.

The first paragraph is braggy, the second one is bashing rival sites. Classy.

I like how easy it is to search for fic on there, live journal was never helpful for me in that regard. But I like the searchability of ff.net, too.

So you understand WHY they are doing it, yet you still think they are just being arrogant. Why do you think Bing is always saying it is the best search engine ever? We all know it isn't, but a company isn't going to admit that.

If it's the best site, how come I get over five times of comments per fic on FFN versus what I get on AO3? And it's not because there are better writers, my fandom's pretty tiny.

Did people really get TOS'ed *regularly*?

I remember one kerfuffle on LJ in all the time that I was on there, which only affected a handful of journals, and I don't know of things happening on other archives.

I'm not trying to be a troll, or saying that AO3 isn't valuable (1 time is certainly enough for people to get wary), but that does seem like an overstatement.

I really don't care. They're not top dog but they're useful. I never read their updates or notes so they can say whatever they want. I'm just gonna keep doing what I do, ignoring them while I use their site.

I always crosspost my fic to both. I like different features of both. I pretty much only read fic at AO3 these days though simply because I like the format better.

AO3 is better than other ff.net rivals (remember mediaminer?), but LJ fandom had more of a sense of community and fic archives for specific series or pairings were pretty good at curating fic.

I use AO3 and ff.net, and ff.net has been better for anime fic, especially now that AO3 is fucking around with the titles.

Ao3 is a hellish archive. It is impossible to find anything other than poorly written slash or supernatural x-overs. Or both. I blame the tag-plosion that goes on there. It makes it impossible to find things.

I'm just there for the fic. I don't really care if they think they're the best around or not. Them thinking that they're awesome doesn't interfere with my fic reading capabilities.

You did find this 'advertisement' on Tumblr, correct?

Is it possible they're just trying to appeal to the perceived average Tumblr age demographic (of under 25), by using phrasing and language that is thought typical of that age group?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-13 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll start using AO3 as soon as there's a way to search for X-Men fic that excludes everything tagged XMFC. (And yes, I've already tried searching with - in front of the XMFC tag. Doesn't work.)

Their search system sucks.

You used to be able to find the best fic on it, but now it seems to be catering to fifteen-year-olds. Though the layout is so much easier to read fic on than any other archives I've used and it doesn't delete fics like ffn, so I'm good.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-13 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on AO3 and I rolled my eyes, too. That post behaves as though there's something wrong with admitting your archive has strengths and weaknesses, and if you can't acknowledge your strengths without slagging off other platforms, that reflects poorly on AO3.

Not that I expected anything different. AO3 seems very much up its own bottom, which is why I don't spend a whole lot of time there.

I like AO3 because it's one of the few archives i can count on to be *readable*. I've gotten older, my eyesight isn't great, and i *cannot* read itty-bitty grey text on white on pages, or pink text on black pages, or white text on pale blue pages.

AO3 doesn't give me an instant headache or anything, which is awesome, and it's easy to post stuff there, and easy to organize stuff.

As far as this 'ad'.... *shrug*. It's a bit boastful, oh well, easy enough to ignore.

I used to meet nice people on FF.net and then make friends with them at LJ. Good times. But that started to go to hell on 2008, I think? Whenever was that Warriors For Innocence wank and the selling out to the Russian Mafia Overlords. /is old

Whatever. I still don't like Tumblr. And I do like AO3, though the current trends in fics right now make me roll my eyes so very hard. The layout is nice and readable. What I'm not so hot on, is the "kudos" button. It's the same as a "like" in Tumblr: Rarely means anything and as a fan-writer one wants to have some feedback besides "I liked it", which could mean anything from "Meh, cool fic sis" to "OMFG IT'S AMAZING AND I LOVED IT AND I LOVE YOU".

The ad? Very poorly thought out. I had to check you meant it REALLY came from the creators/mantainers of AO3, because it reads like sanctimonious holier-than-thou propaganda written by a Tumblrite. I guess they're trying to appeal to young people in what is now the largest fandom platform (to my enormous grief), but it's still not classy. I can only excuse it with the idea they really might need donations and tag wranglers right now.

my major irritation with AO3 is that there is such pressed to tage for everything in a fic. And if you but "chose not to use warnings" and then put a note that this may have trigger scenes, (which I never felt obliged to do on any other fandom forum) you get jumped on for 'tricking' people into reading things.

It's maddening that people can comment to bitch you out for not including, god, "ablest language " was the one that got me gnashing my teeth to points, but never actually comment on my writing or the plot.

Sorry, ranty but it was a sports fandom, hockey RPS is totally going to include training montages! Training montages are the best! I can understand people wanting to warned for rape or incest or something, but exercise in sports? grrrrrrr.

And teen wolf fandom is such a nest of vipers that I just post them to my LJ.

[lj]scarfman

We don't all use it. I never have, at least not as an author. I'm sure they use the word "transformative" in their name because transformative works are fair use, but I can't determine whether they understand the difference between transformative and derivative. Some fanfiction is derivative, e.g. what I write and read.
