Part of the idea of finding that one true love is that you are going to settle down with them and never leave them. Therefore, the mother being courted pulls us out of that, because she has either had a regrettable past or one with a tragedy.

Well it could still be a love song written in the context of a relationship, couldn't it? I thought that was more like what the OP was talking about.

'He Didn't Have To Be' by Brad Paisley. Doesn't fit the OP's request because it's not really a love song about the mother as a person, but it's still romantic in tone.

What about a past that doesn't matter as much as the present? Pretty sure if my boyfriend wrote me a love song it'd be along the lines of "You are the awesomest and I love what we've got, na na na, also your kid is neat and I love to play with Legos, na na na, okay he's in bed, baby let's have some beer and talk about politics and zombies, our life is fantastic."
