This secret kind of disturbs me with its Oedipal implications.

Well, mothers CAN have wild fun. Also, of course most love songs are not going to mention kids or that they are a mother. Why would that even come up in a love song? How would you add that part in there without it sounding weird?

Part of the idea of finding that one true love is that you are going to settle down with them and never leave them. Therefore, the mother being courted pulls us out of that, because she has either had a regrettable past or one with a tragedy.

Yeah, it would be nice to hear a love song that pairs "she's the most beautiful woman in the world" along with "she's the mother of my children" and "our kids are miraculous because of her", because the sheer fact that is that a person who willingly undergoes parenthood and tries their best at it is AWESOME and should be appreciated by anyone who has a partner with kids.

Baby
You successfully delivered a Baby
And I am happy to report that
excessive vaginal stretching is usually a myth
But baby
if excessive vaginal stretching was
something to which you were subjected
I would still be happy to call you my byth

*BRIDGE*

BABY
I REALIZE THIS IS HETERONORMATIVE
AND POSSIBLY SHAMING THE CHILDFREE COMMUNITY
BUT I AM REALLY INTO THE FACT THAT YOU'RE MY
BABY HAVING BABY, BABY

Try country music. I can't think of any specifically, but there are some love songs that feature mothers.

Maybe we have different impressions of what constitutes "modern love songs," but most of the modern songs I like and consider love songs don't contain anything that rules out motherhood. They don't explicitly mention it, if that's what you're looking for, but most of the love songs I listen to say nothing against stability, commitment, responsibility. Maybe we have different ideas about music.

I think marital love might be more a subject in country than in rock or pop.

I love Belle and Sebastian more than anything, but the last time I saw them, it came across as a little creepy that Stuart is still singing about schoolgirls now that he is a married dad well into his 40s.

"Glasses" from Jonathan Coulton

(Anonymous) 2013-10-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That one is rather sweet :)

Country really is the best place for that

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Still not a lot, but some.

"One Hot Mama" - Trace Adkins
"She's Everything" - Brad Paisley

These are less love songs and more songs about a mother and relationships:

"She Didn't Have Time" - Terri Clark
"I'm A Survivor" - Reba McEntire

I'm sure there are more that I'm not remembering. :)

Well, it's clearly because once you've given birth, you can never be thought of as anything other than maternal again. Sex for moms?? Ewwww.

I'm a mom, and it bothers me too. Especially when crap like 50 Shades of Unexciting Sex is called "mommy porn" by most of the masses. So insulting to mothers who do not refer to their vaginas as "down there".

I don't think most songwriters think mothers are unimportant.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
But a lot of love songs are about first or young love. And a lot of songs don't necessarily preclude someone being a mother.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
If you're so disturbed by the whole "mothers can no longer be thought of as anything but mothers" thing, then quit looking for songs that do exactly that.

Love songs are about love, not whether or not you've shoved a baby out of your vagina.

I never would have guessed!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of country songs do this - 'Then', 'Real Life (Never Was The Same Again)', 'Hey Pretty Girl', and 'Remember When' all spring instantly to mind - all of which focus on the guy's general love for his wife, including (but not exclusive to) her as a mother.

Will post more as I think of them :)

I had this discussion in class, a few years ago. One of the stories we read had a mother who felt really good being sexual - it was one of the ways she healed from being in an abusive relationship. (It's called Delia, and of course I can't find it anywhere on the 'net right now.) So for my discussion-based midterm I brought up the topic of why society thinks it's not ok for mothers to be sexual beings, and find confidence and pride in their bodies, let alone be attractive to anyone else. I mean, all women get that message, but *especially* if you're a mother, you have to fit into a very small box.

So yea, it's been something that bugs me, too.

There's a beautiful song by Busby Marou that might be the sort of thing you're looking for. I really like these guys:

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Many romantic songs about women don't actually preclude the subject being a mother though. I mean, if the song's about how great and desirable the woman is, why bother to mention whether she has kids or not (unless the song is specifically celebrating motherhood or family life)? And if the song's focus is on sexiness people generally aren't going to want to think about children at the same time, even if they have them.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Adding to the country songs is "Family Tree." The guy's singing about how sexy his wife is and how he doesn't mind lots of kids (and seems to prefer them) despite their problems. Implication being that the kids show just how much they love each other.
