Disclaimer: I don't watch the show

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-10-14 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Disclaimer disclaimer: I don't watch the show because I think a show that treats Ichabod Crane as a REAL PERSON will make me rage too hard. What's next? Hester Prynne, Attorney At Law? Too much of a history nerd

BUT

As a history nerd I can tell you that guys who were progressive about women and slavery existed. A guy from that period who can treat a black woman with respect is pretty valid as long as they acknowledge that he's in the minority. Abolition was really strong in upstate New York, which is incidentally one of the major birthplaces of the women's movement (Seneca Falls!).

"I will use the 'It Takes Two To Tango' defense!"

"That's very nice Mr. Wright but I'm actually your co-counsul. I hope you do not mind me bringing Mah Baybay to court."

"NO HE IS RIGHT IT IS I ME MY SOUL MY PENIS AND ALSO MY HEART, UGH."

"I rule in favor of the defendant! Any sex with a man that lovely and also dead must have been holy!"

the show is a fantasy though, so why does it matter if Ichabod Crane is treated as a real person?
I don't watch it either, I just don't understand your rage. And I'm also a history nerd.

Would it help you understand if I told you my "rage" would be mostly eyerolls and heavy sighing?

When I saw this show advertised I was hoping for something more Twin Peaks-y (Sleepy Hollow! Weird stuff happening!) and not "No literally we are hunting the Headless Horseman."

If it helps the horseman has only been in the first episode and there's lots of other monsters.

This show is a fantasy that plays super fast and loose with history.

History is more of a suggestion with this show. lmao

He actually says in dialogue that he supported the abolitionist movement.

I like him. He rolls with the punches, when it comes to the future and its progressive ways. Almost too well -- the little moments where he acts like a fish out of water are cute, but there are so few of them.

I just think it be a little different philosophically supporting equality to then waking up 250 years later and still not treading on any toes.

Well, he did tread on Abbie's a bit at the beginning with the trousers and emancipation comments. I just think the writers knew how not to stretch out the joke too much.

You can just imagine him saying things that makes Abbie facepalm off screen.
