How Bad is the Sequel to Mulan?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-14 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Mulan is one of my favorite movies, but I've never seen the sequel because I heard it wasn't good and I didn't want to bother. But I have it on Netflix now and I'm curious and I want to know: is it really really awful? Like, on a scale of Disney Direct-To-Video sequels topping out at "Aladdin and the King of Thieves (yeah I know it wasn't good exactly but I find that shit enjoyable) and hitting the bottom at that God-awful Pocahontas Movie I don't even want to talk about.

It doesn't have to be fantasmagorical or anything, just...does it ruin the characters so bad it stands a chance to spoil the first film for me? Is any of it so OOC that it will burn my eyeballs? Let me know what you think.

Omfg, I just watched this like last week out of morbid curiosity. I've never seen the Pocahontas sequel, but the Aladdin sequels fucking rock and I love them. The Mulan sequel is... okay? Tbh, I was surprised that it wasn't worse, but not really impressed at the same time. I got bored at the end and so I don't exactly know what happened because I decided scrolling my tumblr dash was more interesting.

Also, the songs really suck.

this

it's not eye-gougingly awful, but it is a big disappointment after the first

If you really like Mushu and Shang you probably shouldn't watch it.

Omg, this. Wtf was up with the character assassinations? Mushu's was the worst.

Oh see now that actually gives me serious pause. My main reason for wanting to see the sequel is more of Shang being so hilariously awkward outside a battle situation, and I don't want his character ruined when I finally see more of it.

I think his character wasn't as bad. Mushu's was really bad. Added unnecessary drama bad.

If you liked King of Thieves you'll probably like it. The animation is pretty direct-to-video quality, the story is a lot less "epic" but it's cute. I watched it several years ago so I don't remember too much, but I thought the new characters were entertaining. Just go into it thinking "Yes, time to watch something cheesy that I'm not taking too seriously."

Yes, I think so too!

I thought it was pretty awful. I prefer to pretend it doesn't exist.

I think it sucks tbh, and agreeing with the anons that say the songs are crap and Mushu and Shang have completely altered personalities. I'm just glad I didn't pay to watch it.

Personally, I... think it's the worst Disney sequel I've seen. Granted, Mulan's my favorite Disney movie, so I'm a little protective, but it definitely hurt to watch. The characterization was awful.

It's okay, but it's extremely Americanized. Remember in the first movie, how there was a token attempt to respect Chinese culture? No more of that. The main plotline is that there are three princesses who are headed off to arranged marriages, and Mulan is OMG SO AGAINST ARRANGED MARRIAGES. The movie chooses to ignore all of Mulan's characterization from the first movie, and the fact that she was visiting a matchmaker so she could have a respectable marriage to honor her family. Which is what the princesses are doing.

It's kind of stupid, but I think I might be one of the few people who actually liked the songs, so my point of view might not be the norm.

Pretty bad.

But if you like wonky characterization, easy jokes, and pair the spares, you might like it.

I didn't care for the Mulan sequel. I did enjoy the Beauty and the Beast Enchanted Christmas sequel, but I was also WAY younger when I watched that.

I think it really depends, but I say go in with terrible expectations and it might surprise you or just still be terrible.

DO NOT WATCH IT. I couldn't even finish it. Is as bad as the Pocahontas sequel and characterization is thrown to the wind, and not to paint pretty colors on it either.

Listen to the Anon that say how USian is the new worldview in it. I must also add: The three princesses are going into arranged marriages to avoid a fucking huge-ass war. And Mulan helps them ditch the arrangement when escorting them to the neighbohr kingdoms because LOL WHO CARES ABOUT PEACE AND HONOR THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TWU WUBZ!!1!

not exactly relevant but I thought lion king 2 and lady and the tramp 2 were really good... (and lady and the tramp is my favourite disney movie ever)

Didn't much care for Lady and the Tramp 2, but Lion King 2 is the only Disney sequel I accept as part of both the animated canon and my DVD collection. (Except The Rescuers Down Under, but that was a theatrical release with all the time and care spent on it that that implies, so it doesn't really count.)

I like the princess/Mulan's friends subplot. (Though the girl who ends up with the fat guy's reason for liking him was kind of tacked on)
