THAT MOVIE DOESN'T HAVE A HAPPY ENDING, PEOPLE! It was tragically ironic. And I still groan whenever someone complains about the typical "Spielberg happy ending." Never mind the end was complete Kubrick's idea.

That's...actually up for debate, tbh, since Kubrick originally wanted Spielberg to direct it [and, from what I've heard, was a bit jealous about the [generally pretty heart warming/~feelings~ oriented] films Spielberg produced, and vice versa with Spielberg.]

The film was in production hell because they two kept trying to insist the other direct it...and then it ended up the way it was. ...But yeah, it's pretty irritating that people get who wrote the ending wrong.
