Misaimed Fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
What book, movie, tv show, video game, etc. are you a fan of that has a reputation for having fans that completely miss the point of the work or ignore certain parts of canon (that the creator has confirmed) for their own interest? Do you agree with them? Do they annoy you? Why do you think they're fans of it?

Re: Misaimed Fandom

This is more up for debate than misaimed, but Wuthering Heights - I've heard it called this deeply tragic romance novel, it's what Twilight was based on, but to me it's basically a rebuttal of romance novels. Heathcliff isn't supposed to be likable.

Well, I feel like The Hunger Games got so much press and fandom drama over the "love triangle", they missed the social commentary. Does no one find it disturbing how close we've actually come to an actual Hunger Games? Has anyone else heard of Kid Nation? But even the author seemed to forget at times, so.

I did. It was absolutely nothing like the Hunger Games in any way.

The movies were really disappointing for this very reason. I thought it totally missed the point of the books and focused on all the wrong things.

A.I.

THAT MOVIE DOESN'T HAVE A HAPPY ENDING, PEOPLE! It was tragically ironic. And I still groan whenever someone complains about the typical "Spielberg happy ending." Never mind the end was complete Kubrick's idea.

Re: Misaimed Fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
That's...actually up for debate, tbh, since Kubrick originally wanted Spielberg to direct it [and, from what I've heard, was a bit jealous about the [generally pretty heart warming/~feelings~ oriented] films Spielberg produced, and vice versa with Spielberg.]

The film was in production hell because they two kept trying to insist the other direct it...and then it ended up the way it was. ...But yeah, it's pretty irritating that people get who wrote the ending wrong.

My Little Pony. I don't have much to do with the fandom anymore, but I still look at fanart. And I don't tell anyone I like it anymore because even if you're not a Brony, you're at least a Brony apologist.

Re: Misaimed Fandom

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Brony apologist *snort* Puh-leaze This reminds me of that person who was all "YOU CAN'T USE BRONY ANYMORE AS A FANDOM NICKNAME BECAUSE SOMEONE DID SOMETHING BAD AND IF YOU USE IT YOU'RE ENDORSING IT."

The bad bronies are jerks but you can hate them and still like the art of other people in fandom.

The guys who think the show is catered to them...yeah idiots.....but every fandom has entitled fans. I remember a story about a childfree hardcore person who was all buttmad about a kid showing up at a Harry Potter themed event. Fans like that are EVERYWHERE.

I don't normally comment on stuff related to bronies because that's a hot controversial mess here...but your logic just seems so...."wtf?"

Teen Wolf

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-10-15 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So many fic authors (of Sterek) are only fans because of Tumblr and will admit they don't even watch the show. They just like shipping two hot guys and don't give a crap about characterization or what has happened in canon. there is so much fanon in the fics.

First thing annoys the crap out of me. second thing I don't mind so much if the fic is still good. We all have headcanons, after all, and canon hasn't told us a whole lot about some of the characters so even authors familiar with canon have to make shit up.

500 Days of Summer. I can't count how many guys and girls I've seen misinterpret that entire movie and actually see it as romantic. And blame Summer for not staying with Tom, see Tom as the ideal guy, see the relationship as ideal, or relate to Tom. It's almost like, did we watch the same movie?

Not really misaimed as well manipulated by the creators, but the Hannibal tv show. People apparently forgot that Hannibal is, you know, the villain.

I'm not sure if it has a fandom, but there are a surprisingly large amount of people who read "Lolita" and come out of it thinking Humbert is just misunderstood and Dolores is a seductress.

People who love Lord of the Rings for it's "worldbuilding" (never mind the anachronisms and paper-thin social structures) ignoring the introduction to the Silmarilion and Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics.

Legend of Korra.

Oh my fuck, it was never going to be a social justice oppression essay people get that in your heads. It's fine if you wanted that instead but don't pretend that that's what it IS or that it FAILED just because it wasn't that. I swear I couldn't find a descent discussion anywhere without it becoming freshman sociology class where Korra was the REAL bad guy you guys. Makes sense. Totally supported in canon.

Also, I know this sounds bad, but this fandom's kinda dumber than average. People don't remember anything about the show. People get obvious things wrong in their serious arguments all the time. I feel like some kinda fanatic compared to everyone because I'm constantly correcting them in my head about entire events from canon. This is embarrassing but the words "you call yourself a fan?" goes through my head whenever I read discussions like in no other fandom I've been in. There is something special about this fandom. A special kind of stupid that permeates all tiers of it, like a cake with shit for frosting.

Whatever. I'll own it. I am a fanatic.

The series has just begun, and there are already people writing about how Kill la Kill is a "deconstruction" of anime fanservice.

No, I'm pretty sure it's not. It's. Just fanservice.

The people who complain about how The Avengers sucked because it was the popcorn super hero movie it was supposed to be and not some deep, important message bearing work of art.

And just about every fandom where a few popular fanon tropes completely overshadow the canon characterisations.

There are still people who believe Every Breath You Take by The Police is a romantic lovesong. Even Sting is disturbed that so many people do that.

Doctor Who and the people who can't handle the fact that Doctors and Companions change every so often. Okay fair enough New!Who canon hasn't been vary helpful with regards to Companions and how the Doctor reacts to losing them, Rose especially, but still... THINGS CHANGE PEOPLE!
