I'm uncomfortable being attracted to redheads because of my close relationship with my mother who is a redhead. (No, it's not sexual, but I'm all she's got and she's clingy and I just want to get away and I can't right now.)

Don't be, Anon. It has been scientifically demonstrated that actually we humans are prone to be attracted to characteristics we saw in our parents in the first years of our lives. Even when the memories are not the best ones, we tend to seek in our partners stuff we saw during our formative stage.

I don't have any kind of sexual attraction to my mom or dad, and I'm a lesbian, but I'm pretty damn sure my dad is the reasons I tend to like nerdy+kind-eyed+wild-haired+bespectacled+male characters, for example. Remember the D&D cartoon? Yeah, Presto was my favorite. Magic School Bus? Immediately drawnt to Arnold. I must have been six back then? But to this day my favorite male characters/actors are always bespectacled nerds. I feel at home with them.

Going by psychological characteristics, I'm also pretty sure my mom is the reason I always end up falling for angry dominant women who are also very volatile, demand absolute surrender, and don't know how to party. So yeah, I hate to say it but in a way there was a sliver of reason in between all the idiotic shit Freud said.

That said, do you want to get away because she's clingy, or is this attraction to readheads making you uncomfortable with her clingyness?

... I'm sorry now that I phrased it this way, really. I have an amazing mom, it's just that I'm currently in a feud with her that has lasted several weeks and. Yeah, I'm bitter about it - and this wasn't mature at all from me. She has a lot of redeeming qualities and is a good person at the core. I could've said "lawful" or "focused on her work" instead of "doesn't know how to party", for example. "A good authority figure" instead of "someone who demands absolute surrender". I'd like to rewrite that comment, but it's impossible now.
