Maybe it's not their first language, jackass.

Thank you for calling them out.

I'm so sick of snide assholes online "OH YOU MADE A MISTAKE! YOU FAIL AT EVERYTHING FOREVER"

I could understand making a comment if there were so many mistakes it was unreadable but this.....get over yourself original anon. Big deal.

As a nitpicker myself, I can confirm this.

Making fun of people for bad English is one of my biggest pet peeves. My mom and dad are both ESLers and my mom's facebook used to be painful (she's gotten better as she uses the internet more) so when I see it I always think of her and cringe.

During my first years in the English fandom I was the shyest lurker you could ever imagine because I was deathly afraid of making any mistakes. I didn't felt confident enough in my English, despite several English-speaking friends that assured me I was decent enough already. I always imagined an asshole (or several) would come and start to mock my mistakes. So I typed the comments to scratch the itch, but then erased them before posting.

Afterwards, I realized that communication at the internet went, more or less, like that Tumblr post put it (most of the time). Paraphrased, because I can't find it.

ESL speaker: I deeply apologize for the subpar quality of my vocabulary and grammar, and my atrocious accent. I hope we can still communicate successfully, and that I don't mangle your native language too rudely. Thank you.

Native speaker: lol okei

Even after realizing this, and knowing that my fear was somewhat stupid, to this day it takes me a lot of courage to post in English; but at least I'm commenting instead of staying silent, so I think there's a bit of progress there.

What I mean is: We ESLs are always open to keep on improving. So in a way, getting feedback on our conversational levels is an useful thing. But the way we get it matters a lot. Concrit is always welcome. Mocking others just because they misspelled something or the structure is awkward is a fucking awful thing to do, and is not.

Thank you! I'm glad I got the point across nicely :3

These days I'm also aware that this isn't a problem only ESLs face, but also native speakers with learning difficulties, and even people who just plain recieved an awful education and couldn't progress further. So nowadays I'm trying to also give the benefit of doubt when I'm comunicating in Spanish and I come across someone who mispells stuff or has terrible orthography. My gut-reaction still is to cringe, but I realize it's not always about lazyness :/

I know what you mean, I used to be really, really uptight/impatient about that sort of thing, too. D:
