Most people are "cowards". But I would not call that cowardly so much as normal. The exceptionally rare people are like Esmeralda (I spelled that right the first time!).

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. We're not all heroes. I'm a damn good person, with strong convictions, but I don't know that I would burn at the stake to stand by said convictions. That's pretty huge.

And some people would say it's cowardly to choose death rather than go through something terrible in order to live. It's all in how you look at it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a very good point.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this is so true. My personal issue with secrets like this one is that I'd like to die so very much that the idea of an actual cause just makes it that much lovelier.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's cowardly, I think it's just a different way of working with what you've got. One is not better than the other. Heck, a lot of people would say choosing death is the cowardly way out.

I think what Esmeralda does is exceptionally brave which is why she is one of my favorite Disney characters.

OP

Nothing wrong with valuing your own life. I wouldn't call it cowardly, because for as much as people think they'd be the hero it's a whole different story they were actually put into that situation.

This kinda reminds me how a lot of Shingeki no Kyoujin fans like to think they'd join the Scouting Legion (which is the most dangerous and has extremely high mortality rate) whereas if they were actually faced with that choice IRL most people would join the Military Police (safe and luxurious life without having to fight).

Eh, just cause most people would act that way doesn't make it not cowardly. The point is that being a coward isn't necessarily a bad thing. If it makes one do something horrible to others, then yes, it's bad. But just wanting to save your own life? Maybe you're not doing anything brave, but that's not horrible.

I loved how the manga and anime showed that it wasn't an easy choice for some to join the Scouting Legion. Some of them were shaking out of fear and/or crying. I think Sasha also had the strong urge to run away? We hardly get to see such reactions anymore.

As you can see from the comments above me, it's a complicated issue. There isn't really a right or wrong answer. There is only an answer that you can make for yourself. It doesn't mean much but it's yours.

There is nothing cowardly about living to fight another day. Esmeralda almost didn't survive, and she did barely anything against Frollo directly. The most she did in the fight against Frollo was publicly humiliate him (which only made him hate gypsies more) and inspire others to fight against him.

Stabbing him in his sleep would have been a lot more effectual. Inspiration certainly has it's place, but it only works when someone actually does something once they're inspired.

People don't want to die. If they can bear the consequences of whatever action will let them live, they'll choose life. And everyone has their limits, but they may be very very narrow.

Esmeralda is braver in her convictions than most people can ever be. That's what makes her such a fantastic heroine, but we can't all be like her, and that's more than fine.

[personal profile] anonlulz 2013-10-16 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Be careful in thinking that

brave = good = right

coward = bad = wrong

It's a dangerous thing to believe.

[personal profile] logicbutton 2013-10-16 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen it, but from what I can tell, that basically would have been rape, right? Coerced sex under threat of death? If so, all it would say about you is that when given a choice between rape and death, you would choose your life. Nothing to be ashamed of.

I enjoyed reading through the comment conversations spawned by this secret. (In a positive way, not snickering over wank.) Thanks for creating it, OP!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It'd really be rape since he would have been coercing you into it. Sleep with me or die isn't much of a choice.

It's not shameful to want to live.
