There is nothing cowardly about living to fight another day. Esmeralda almost didn't survive, and she did barely anything against Frollo directly. The most she did in the fight against Frollo was publicly humiliate him (which only made him hate gypsies more) and inspire others to fight against him.

Stabbing him in his sleep would have been a lot more effectual. Inspiration certainly has it's place, but it only works when someone actually does something once they're inspired.

I don't want to come across as a social justice warrior asshole, and I'm NOT trying to be nasty (I'm actually worried you'll run across someone who IS) so please don't take it as me yelling at you:

The word "gypsy" is actually a slur almost on parr with the n-word for Romani people. The correct term is Roma or rroma.

I tried to find more official links but this is the best I could find. She has a lot of good coverage of it and explains WHY it's so awful.

Thank you for being helpful and nice about this, but as for whether the word "gypsy" is a slur or not, the jury is out. In any case, that's what they were called in the movie, so it's a valid term for this discussion.

I'm aware. Although I want to thank you for not being a jerk about it -seriously; bullying-activism is just the worst- I don't think I was in the wrong. Which is not to say I don't agree with you; it is definitely a slur in modern context.

However, the Disney film, as well as Hugo's original novel, iirc, use that term, and only that term. Also, this work does not point out that Esmeralda's people are Roma, or any other specific Romani subgourp; this is more of a personal decision, but I don't want to call them Roma if they are Sinti. "Gypsy", although an admittedly offensive term, is the only word available in the Hunchback context.

No, it's not. This one, specific, girl finds it to be horribly offensive (it's laughable that she attempts to connect it with the n-word. A word so offensive people can't even refer to it in the most clinical of terms). Being PERSONALLY horrifically offended by something doesn't give it that same weight.

The biggest way it can be offensive is that gypsy =/= Romani all of the time.

I'll point out the biggest flaw in her entire reasoning: people used it hatefully because they hated the subgroup, not because it was meant to, on its own, denote offense. If I call you "bitch", you don't say "What? It's just a way to refer to women!", because it's not. It's an INSULT to refer to women. Gypsy isn't an insult to refer to Romani.
