Things I did when I was there with my family:

- Live jazz at the Village Vanguard (http://www.villagevanguard.com/)

- Dangerfield's comedy club (http://www.dangerfields.com/)

- MOMA (student's get a discount but iirc you had to buy your student pass in advance and what I did was e-mail them a scanned picture of my student ID! Worth it to call them and ask if it's not too late!)

- A Broadway show but that's pretty expensive and you most likely won't get decent seats now -- in fact the jazz club and the comedy club I believe we had to reserve a spot for but it's worth checking out their website and giving them a call

If you see someone in a costume don't ask to get your picture taken with them because they will then ask for money and it's the most embarrassing touristy thing you could fall for. However if you stop and listen to a street musician you SHOULD give them some money.

Keep walking, try to stay single file, there will be New Yorkers trying to get places. It will annoy them if you look up a lot so you should do that as often as possible because fuck it's cool, it's different than what you're used to and you're only there for a little while and you came there to see stuff.

When you're at a crosswalk don't stop for long, even if the light says don't walk, if there are no cars coming, you keep walking.
