Things to do in New York City

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm am going on holiday with my family to NYC (there from 16th-21st), but due to being busy with school and working and life in general I haven't really gotten around to researching what I want to do when there.

So, do any of you have any suggestions on what to do/see when in NYC for the first time? :)

(All answers are very much appreciated, but I most likely won't be able to reply as I have to go to bed now, so I thank you in advance <3 )

The best way to do things that are actually cool instead of tourist-packed bores is to go to NYC with someone who's lived in NYC for a good long while.

Barring that, look around online (if you have time) for personal blogs and journals detailing NYC trips. Don't bother with the official tourist recommendations from official tourist sources.

Things I did when I was there with my family:

- Live jazz at the Village Vanguard (http://www.villagevanguard.com/)

- Dangerfield's comedy club (http://www.dangerfields.com/)

- MOMA (student's get a discount but iirc you had to buy your student pass in advance and what I did was e-mail them a scanned picture of my student ID! Worth it to call them and ask if it's not too late!)

- A Broadway show but that's pretty expensive and you most likely won't get decent seats now -- in fact the jazz club and the comedy club I believe we had to reserve a spot for but it's worth checking out their website and giving them a call

- http://www.nicksnyc.com/mainmenu.html pretty sure this is the awesome pizza place we ate at

If you see someone in a costume don't ask to get your picture taken with them because they will then ask for money and it's the most embarrassing touristy thing you could fall for. However if you stop and listen to a street musician you SHOULD give them some money.

Keep walking, try to stay single file, there will be New Yorkers trying to get places. It will annoy them if you look up a lot so you should do that as often as possible because fuck it's cool, it's different than what you're used to and you're only there for a little while and you came there to see stuff.

When you're at a crosswalk don't stop for long, even if the light says don't walk, if there are no cars coming, you keep walking.

What kinds of things do you like? I'd recommend checking out Bryant Park and Union Square. I love walking Union Square on a Friday/Saturday for the farmer's market.

I'm going to bed now too, but feel free to reply/PM me. I live outside of the city and am constantly in and out of NYC. If you give me a better idea of what you like to do (shopping, food, tourist sites, skyline views, plays etc) I can try and see what I can come up with.
