'sup, butthurt Matt fan?

I'm not the OP of the secret, but I can tell you it grinds my gears probably just as much as theirs that people take a character who has, at the most, 10 or so lines in the ENTIRE series and turn him into some bigshot character who is as important as the real main characters. Sure, it's cool that he has fans. Sure it's cool that people ship him with other characters. Sure, it's cool that he's popular; there's nothing wrong with a minor, minor character having a large fanbase: hell, more power to you for it! But creating a fanon for a character that is based around a few minuscule lines of dialog and then claiming it's "canon" is absurd. Canon is what drives fan works, and judging people based on an idea not set in stone by the creator at all is stupid and unfair to newer fans of the series who haven't had as much of a chance to be exposed to the fanon as the rest of us.

tl;dr: not everybody loves matt. boo hoo.

See, I have some similar issues with certain characters in other fandoms that became way too popular for their personal merits. But those are characters I like. You confess to having never liked Matt to begin with. So again, I beg the question, why the butthurt?

My bad, that's just typically the reaction people give when they're butthurt over someone hating their favorite character. Anyway.

Like I said, I'm not the OP of the secret. Originally I didn't mind him; he was a nice background character, but that's what he was a background character. I liked him for that. What I don't like is how fandom raises him up on a pedestal and pretends he's some amazing character who is "just as important as everyone else, the author just doesn't show you because he doesn't get a lot of lines."

People get annoyed because a lot of the fandom focuses on him over the main characters. I feel bad for people who ship Mello/Near, because 90% of all fics involving Mello are Mello/Matt fics.

And really, when it all comes down to it, the only reason he has such a big fanbase to begin with is because he's good looking. Had he been only mildly attractive he would've been ignored just like any other short-lived character. Sure there may be people who like him for other reasons now, but even those reasons are mostly based on the fanon created for him, and that fanon sprung up because of people who thought, "HOLY SHIT A HOT GUY HANGING OUT WITH MELLO I HAVE TO CREATE A BACKSTORY AND PERSONALITY FOR HIM SO HE CAN HAVE HOT SEXXORZ WITH MELLO AND I CAN RP HIM LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL".

This mostly just goes to show how shallow the fandom is in general.

Oops. Ah well, tl;dr is tl;dr.

DN isn't my fandom, but the ones I do play around in are comparable in size and possibly batshit insane creds. Still, I've never understood the logic behind transfer hate, i.e. hating on a character/pairing because its fans are retarded. It's this... stressing so much over what other people get up to bit that confuses me.

Here, an example. I hate Hidan of Naruto. Think he's boring, kind of annoying, don't get all the hype surrounding his presence in the manga. On my flist are some of the biggest and arguably notorious Hidan fans in the fandom. We get along famously. Pun intended.

Sorry this has little to do with your point, but I love you for not understanding why Hidan's so HOMGA HE'S SO AWESOME because I feel exactly the same way.

I'm a Matt fan and there isn't anything you can make "ZOMG canon" from anything he said. It is annoying when the fangirls do that with him. Just because Mello said sorry for him dying HAS TO MEAN THEY WERE HAVING SEX!!! They make people like me who like him the urge to have nothing to do with him.

So, yeah I agree with you about not making shit up from characters and not making then out to be more important than the main characters. It's not cool at all.

3. Your source is probably from the internet, but in my hardcopy of HTR13 says Mello asked Matt for help.

So it's not fanon to say that they probably were friends of some sort - Ohba portrayed that as so. Of course, how sex got into the picture baffles me too. One ficcer actually said, "with this pairing, it's hard not to revolve it around sex."
