I know what you mean, I agree with you that the show is struggling to balance a young savvy audience with the basic appeal of the show, but I don't think it's a conservative v liberal thing (even if they do say bitch a lot and Dean and Cas are never going to make out).

A nostalgic setting isn't necessarily followed by nostalgia for the patriarchy - queer fangirls are nostalgic about rock and roll and cars too! Story doesn't have to be about "championing progressive ideas" or over-idealizing old ones- if it's any good at all, it will be more complex than that. I'm not much of a fan, but I think that's one of the things SPN does well.
