thank you for describing exactly why i have a hard time with this show.

(although the current music does suck but that doesn't mean classic rock=conservativsm. One John Lennon is worth more than a million Miley Cyruses and Gagas as far as I'm concerned.)

I've got to say I totally agree with this secret. It's the reason I stopped watching. It made me so very uncomfortable, I'm not even USian, but it had "AMERICA FUCK YEAH" written all over it. And I've enjoyed a lot of pieces of media that use roadtrips across the US as a setting, it's not anything against the country, but against that particular angle of USian culture - it's what you precisely described: Dean is a redneck, and there's no way to deny that.

There's some truth in this. It is the weirdest thing to see my very "conservative" acquaintances campaigning to save SPN, since I can see them having aneurisms if they managed to find one of the SPN fan communities. One page would do them in.

Hmmmm I don't think so. I think you're conflating things that shouldn't really be conflated. It's certainly an old-school, conservative show aesthetically - I mean that, especially at the beginning, it's stylistically and artistically a throwback to older aesthetics, older ideas of television, just generally older shit. But that's not the same as being politically conservative, and it doesn't require being politically conservative, and being a throwback to awesome cars and cheeseburgers does not at all have to be politically conservative. It doesn't have to be a big thing about "remember when white males were dominant" - it just has to be "awesome cars are fuckin' awesome." That's not an inherently political message.

And I would argue, in addition, that the realities of network demographics, and the network that Supernatural was on and the demographics they knew they were targeting, argues against the idea that they would be surprised that people with liberal political views would watch. They were targeting young women, they knew what they were getting into. If it's an attempt to make a show along the lines of older entertainment, it's also one that's pretty obviously framing it in fairly modern terms, appealing to a modern audience which is not at all interested in conservative nostalgia. What I'm saying is that the element of the show's appeal that ultimately stems from the two attractive guys that star in it is much more important and central to the show than any kind of atavistic anti-PC nostalgia, and is not necessarily compatible with it.

tl;dr being a throwback or being aesthetically conservative or old-fashioned does not require being politically conservative, please don't treat them as the same thing

This reminds me of how I (a watcher from day one, but never into it enough to be in fandom) was talking to my friend (latecomer who is now really really into the show) about Supernatural, and her complete shock when I mentioned that the show does have male viewers. Because, well, action, scariness, tough dudes with guns, pretty girls, etc. It's pretty much made for them.

The thought had literally never occurred to her.

on one hand, i agree, but on the other, "if they do anything progressive, the show will fail" is why there's such an issue with getting representation for minority groups in the first place.

i mean, i would love to see a bi character that was like dean on tv. i would. i just don't think the spn writers would have any idea how to pull it off in a way that isn't glee-levels of offensiveness because their track record is awful.

I guess that part of the fanbase wasn't paying attention when they had Godstiel rampage through the campaign office of "Senator Michelle Walker" for being sanctimonious hypocritical and generally awful.

Yeah, if you think that than obviously you don't watch the show because how conservative is it to portray God as a dead beat dick of a dad? Have an Angel say the Bible has got it only half right?

And, oh, yeah, fuck you on the music part. That's some sexist and racist garbage right there. The idea that rock like Motorhead, Led Zeppelin, CCR and their ilk are only for white males is backward. You are backward.

While I think this may be true to an extent, I also think Supernatural is show about change, personal growth and revising opinions. It's certainly not stagnant, and I think that while the show may have not originally been set up to push boundaries, it isn't that show now. Not that it's wildly progressive now, but I think the writers may "risk it" based on what the show has become.

When I tried to give the show a chance this was pretty much my problem with it. That and the Christianity. I thought it was more broad supernatural stuff, not straight up Christian universe. And yeah, a lot of the conservative stuff is kind of subtle and it's not hardcore ultra conservative, but I agree that at the core values of the show it's a very conservative values and universe.

I don't think anyone was "set up to" defend anything, but this is an interesting point. I think the spn writers are genuinely trying to please the Destiel fans, tho. Who knows.

I know what you mean, I agree with you that the show is struggling to balance a young savvy audience with the basic appeal of the show, but I don't think it's a conservative v liberal thing (even if they do say bitch a lot and Dean and Cas are never going to make out).

A nostalgic setting isn't necessarily followed by nostalgia for the patriarchy - queer fangirls are nostalgic about rock and roll and cars too! Story doesn't have to be about "championing progressive ideas" or over-idealizing old ones- if it's any good at all, it will be more complex than that. I'm not much of a fan, but I think that's one of the things SPN does well.

Yeah, that's similar to why I couldn't get into it, though for me it didn't so much feel conservative as much as it felt full of dumb macho posturing. It was like watching someone's stepdad try to be cool.

Canon Destiel is NEVER going to happen. EVER. Anyone who thinks that it will is very sadly deluding themselves.

Still, I don't see Supernatural as a conservative show. Yeah, the songs are classic rock, but I don't see why that makes the show conservative. I'm very liberal and pretty much the only music I listen to is classic rock (it's what I grew up with and love to this day).

Dean shovels down the meat, but that doesn't always go so well for him, so it's not like it's "guilt-free." He was the one affected by the Turducken incident, and when he was aged in the poker game, he was practically on death's door due to his poor eating habits. And Sammy eats healthier most of the time, and yeah, he gets razzed about it sometimes, but who doesn't? I'm vegan and I get razzed by my friends all of the time about it, in a mostly-good-natured way.

I don't get the clothes thing either. They wear the same shit all of the time. I wear flannel because it's warm and comfy; does that make me conservative? LOL. That makes no sense.

I do get the treatment of women thing; that's the thing that bothers me most about the show.
